There Used to Be ...

By Jessica W., McDonough, GA

There used to be a lake here;
did you see it?
There are memories here;
do you remember them?
There is a past here;
did you realize that?
There are secrets here;
do you know them?
All is now grown and thicketed.
All is covered in a blanket of vines.
Not a single soul cared enough to maintain this place here.
Now this untamed growth, these vines, they are now razed;
completely husked from their native soil.
What shall replace them?
Buildings with smoke.
Houses with litter.
Bare, soiled dirt.
Thousands of careless feet, rushing over this place that once held picnics; a family’s midday walk; solitude for a soul that needs rest.
A history lies within here, but, will you ever know?
Everything changes:
technologies, advancements seem to ruin, destroy and maim our environment as well as minds.
Will you ever know about that lake,
or the memories,
or even hear of the secrets?
You will know, for I will tell you;
I shall transcend from my generation to the next.
But you and yours to follow will be deprived, for, you, will not know.
