By Emily D., Underhill, VT

After reading Kari D.’s article “My Generation,” I felt I had to voice my opinion. Although the genocide in Darfur is appalling, I can’t help thinking that people support this cause because of the media coverage of famous people who campaign for it. It has become the “charity du jour.”

I challenge those like Kari, who really want to make a difference, to campaign on behalf of less talked about events (as well as tragedies like Darfur). What about sex slavery in Ukraine? AIDS in China? Women’s rights in Saudi Arabia? I hope these issues will be brought into the spotlight as the genocide in Darfur has been. I applaud Kari’s dedication to bringing change to the world, and I hope more people will follow her example.
