Teen Ink Magazine, September 2000 : Poetry Articles

A Daily Routine
This morningI awoke,
Reluctantly
Unwrapped myself from
A nest offlannel,
And tiptoed to the bathroom
To begin my dailyroutine
Of washing, brushing and dressing
For school.

Annoyance
I cross theborder
(showing ID, of course),
I leave the restraints of"Grammar-land" easily
and encompass the freedom of"Poem-wood"
Here I am unfettered by rules,
unruled bybooks.

Brooklyn Bridge
Sun upon my head,
Scorching brown locks.
Fatherstriding,
Too fast for little legs.
High above theroadway,
Atop the perpetual roar,
And the steel bluewater,
Churning below.
Running on the planks,
Staying to theright
Of that faded, yellow line.

Chatham
Smell of saltair:
sweet
Sandy beaches
Rain:
so often

Outdoorshowers
washing away beach
Relaxing air
You know isonly
during summer there

Feeling of joy
you can't put intowords

The adventure of a
house not your own

And ...

Dandelions
Mycold, unblinking eyes
took in the solitary view.
All the usualcrowd was there.
Piano prodigy in the corner,
plodding throughsome sonata.
Ever-moody poets were draped
luxuriously onvenerable chairs
and the puke-green shag carpet,
contemplatingtheir own nothingness.

Fall
The leavesare on fire again,
winter licking them with catlike eyes
andholding our breath still and silent in the air.

Film Critic
I want to bethe picture show for you,
so you can sit in a dark theater
andwatch my movie,
watch my form slide seamlessly
across thescreen,
watch my character develop,
watch me ignore you eatingpopcorn and
yawning in your seat.

Loneliness II
It's the rainin Baltimore
In the summer. It's the
sound of the lonelysoul
revealing its grief on a piano.
The piano keys the tone ofthe
gray lives led day by day.
The tones are isolated bythe
dismal rain from the solid
ways of the world.

Rain Watch
Thunder rolling high inthe clouds
As the trickling droplets of water race down mywindow
I press my small nose against the cool glass
Sporadicflashes of purple light dart across the sky
And the delicate greenleaves glisten with refreshment
Streams of life-giving water ...

Riddles
itis a dangerous game.
i know this,
because an old woman toldme
as i helped her across the street.
a slip of the tongue,
ablink of an eye -
all illusions fall to dust.
then a shooting starcarried her away.

Shoes
oppression
led tosegregation
its spin-off now is degradation
still I thrive in thishating nation
yet your shoes are brand new
I've seenfear
fester in boiling pots of ignorance
fueled by miseducation ofmulticulturalism
and misconceptions
yet your shoes are ...

Sunday
Sunday worea long, brown skirt
that touched right above the ankle
during along, hot summer day
with heavy dampness in the air.
Sunday woreno shoes
"feet should feel the hum of theground.

The City
As I walk in the city
several things strike meas odd

everything is square
square and precise
andperfect

nature likes curves
nature likes spontaneity

asI walk through the city
many things I notice
are thesame

the same people every day
doing ...

The Red Rose
Wrinkly, blue-eyedwoman with red tainted hair
Humming to the tune of "GreenSleeves,"
Dressed in faded blue jeans in a rose floweredsweater,
I call her my Nana.

Untitled
Don't know quitewho I am -
but I'm something more than there -
unaware of my selfpower -
I am slightly unstable -
gone too far to fall back down-
here and now, forbidden to be again -
it's come to be told I amaround -
time for me to ask of myself -
cage the worries ...
