'Tis Grand
by Claire C., Braintree, MA
"'Tis grand," Eleanor remarked in her strong Dublin accent while scrutinizing the freshly scrubbed bathroom floor. Thank goodness, I thought as I wiped my forehead and dumped the lemon-scented remnants of a long day's work down the drain.

Confessions of a News Freak
by Madison J., Greer, SC
The dim sky collided with the bright lights of New York towering over me. Clutching my carefully made sign, I shivered and tried to move my frozen legs. I looked at my watch - five minutes until the "Today Show" was on air.

Cutting Broc
by Allison S., Mt. Angel,, OR
My alarm clock blared and I rolled over to see that awful hour I had been dreading since the day I signed up to be a broccoli cutter: five o'clock. As I forced myself to get up, I thought, I've heard of jobs that require a person to get up early, but 5 a.m.

Gang Life
by Luis T., Union Gap, WA
I grew up in a town called Yakima, and as a kid I always wanted to be like my brother. Everything he did, I did, and I followed him everywhere even though he didn't like it very much.

I was about 12 when I got into gangs.

Gram
by Faith D., Barre, VT
My favorite time of year is fall. I love it because leaves turn colors, wool sweaters are pulled from the closet, and people make pumpkin pies. It's the perfect time to sit inside on a chilly evening and sip warm apple cider in front of the fire and chat with a loved one.

Halloween at My House
by Kaitlin T., Rockford, MI

"No!" my mother impatiently roared.

Hey, Pop Tart
by Rachel S., Williamsville, NY
My mom has been acting strange lately. I'm beginning to think that she's on drugs. She takes at least 13 pills every morning and I'm wondering how long she thinks I'm believing her line of "Oh, these? They're vitamins." Uh huh, all right.

Lifeguarding on Lovell's Island
by Maura M., Cohasset, MA
Last summer, Boston saw fit to staff remote Lovell's Island in the middle of Boston Harbor with seven newly certified teenage lifeguards. On the first day, I arrived to discover that the address was not a beach or a pool, but a run-down industrial loading dock.

My Obsession
by Tiffany T., Oswego, IL
Boo! Rah!"

Yes, even though I survived icy stares from a zombie pushing a corpse in a baby buggy and a gangly, white-faced janitor wielding a brain on a broomstick, I still managed to get startled by the ghost pirate who stalked random bridge-crossers at Six Flags' Fright Fest.

My World as a Firefighter
by Laura F., Enfield, CT
My world is controlled by the sounds of four sets of tones. When one of them sounds, I'm either out of bed, out the door, or both. The newest set of tones is also my favorite - the sound of my fire pager.

The Perfect Job
by Katie B., Elmwood, WI
Most teenagers hate working and only do it for money to buy useless things. For me it's different - I love my job! The only thing I hate is that I can only work from April to November.

There aren't many people with a job like mine - I don't work outside or in a building.
