Barbie Dolls and Hot Pants
by Ave T., Palm Bay, FL
In summer day care, outside had always been my favorite place. Going out was a prelude to another epic adventure. As a tomboy, I stuck with the boys who made up games in which we were all characters with names, personalities, and skills way beyond our real selves.

Disenchanted at the Discothèque
by Antonio R., Monroe, CT
The velvet rope glares at me, a bulwark separating me from a supposedly good time. My friends push me forward, past the immense man in a black leather jacket who guards the door. I still can’t believe I am here.

Emergency Room 11
by Malcolm L., Plano, TX
Blood soaked her shirt. She let out a deep bellowing noise, an attempt at coughing drowned out by her inability to breathe. She stared blankly at me, as if she wanted to say something. I fastened a blood pressure cuff on her right arm while the charge nurse tried to get another IV line started.

by Erica F., Farmington, NY
The lights go out – another power outage. “Grab the candles,” Mom says, and I do. My younger brother and I raid every room to collect the tall candles and votives spaced around the house.

Popular Misconceptions
by Lauren M., Tucson, AZ
I was awkward in middle school: bony and athletic, with a high grade in science and a low one in self-esteem. Though I had friends, I didn’t fit the mold of popularity. I was picked last in flag football and I sometimes ate lunch by myself.

The Boy Who Lived
by Chris D., So. Plainfield, NJ
Way back when I could only imagine what the top of a counter looked like, I longed to be something more than I was. I wanted to live in a daydream world, where anything could happen. Each day, I dressed up as in one of my many identities, taking on the attributes of that character.
