Stare

By Anonymous, Palmer, MA

Why does everyone seem to be looking at me?

Sure, maybe I walk funny,

but that doesn't mean they have to stare.

Don't they know I don't want to walk funny?

I want to do all the things they can do,

My parents say it might be better if they knew.

What do they want me to do,

go over the loudspeaker and announce it?

If I did that, they would stare even more,

and whisper, "There goes the girl with arthritis."

Before I got this, I could do anything,

anything they can do anyway.

Don't they know what it is like to have a sprain?

Well, try living with one all of the time.

Try waking up so stiff you can hardly walk.

I really hate people staring at me as I

hobble.
