Teen Ink Blogs

By Lauren D., Houston, TX

Mom stands in front of the big white sink

Washing some vegetable -

Unimportant to my memory

Through the window

Which lets me see cows milling in the distance

Dry yellow sunlight filters in

Illuminating the room in the old tin house

With the dark red floor

Where things are always different

She shouts to my sisters over the sound of running water

“1 cup of flour, add a pinch of salt”

At her request, pots and pans begin to clang

I feel content

Watching this scene unfold

Knowing that anywhere else it wouldn’t
