Teen Ink Blogs

By Gracie B., New Paltz, NY

     They buried you today,
Along with my hopes for spring.
Put you deep under the frozen ground,
Leaving only the solemn banks of snow
To watch over you.
Bought a woolen coat
To wear.
Didn’t want to catch my death from the cold.
Although I wouldn’t mind seeing you
One last time.
Walked home the long way.
Down past the beach,
Cold sand in my high-heeled shoes.
Slate gray sky, the color of your eyes.
“You don’t get through life by taking the easy way out,”
But sometimes if you take the long way, it’s easier to forget.
Pushed open the door and sat down with a sigh.
Maybe I’ll keep my coat on and lie here awhile,
Let my mind take me places where it’s warm,
Where there’s still hope of a thaw.
And if I wake up,
Maybe Spring will have come.
And I won’t need a woolen coat
To keep out the cold.
