Teen Ink Blogs

By Alicia S., Arlington Heights, IL

Remember the heat nap we took,
lounging by the lake?
Sun rays bounced off the water;
we were surrounded by
sparkling champagne.
When I rested my head on your chest
my drippy wet hair serpentined into a curly mess,
a look I kept for the entire afternoon.
Hours floated away
like a balloon that escaped from a child’s small hand.
Strawberry ice cream cascaded down
its waffle cone bed
into a tasty puddle
for your dog.
Remember the lion’s red mane
that filled the sunsetting sky?
The perfume of sunscreen lingered long past nightfall.
Flames waved with serene and destructive beauty,
while sparks swooped upward to join the stars.
The dewy air warned us that
she was coming.
She was dark, and harsh, thunderous, and dazzling.
She came every night that week,
and shrunk us in her shadows.
We ran inside as you took my hand.
