By Juliet S., Radnor, PA

I lift my eyelid
And the world begins.
A jagged edge jumps across the sky,
Slicing the night with its flaming blade.
Bleeding crimson rivers.
The rays shoot out across glistening lake surfaces,
Twinkling and winking.
They skate along smooth leaves, wet with early morning dew,
Making recurring figure eights.
They sing throughout the woven patterns of the branches,
They skip and dance along cloud linings,
Leaving trails of vibrant colors,
Like the veil of a rainbow bride.
The light runs, like charging fire horses,
Their nostrils huffing out hot, angry air
As they run across the grassy plain,
Chasing away the darkness.
I lift my fingers,
And beams shoot out,
Like cannons in the war of sun and moon.
The stars scuttle away,
Shuffling and grumbling,
And the moon, slowly,
Stubbornly descends.
I raise myself from my horizon bed,
And break into a grin.
Every morning
I am a new beginning.
I am luminous,
Celebrating in jubilation,
Throwing back my head,
And letting my mouth laugh with joy,
At the new morning ahead.
I am the daybreak.
