By Jane W., Makanda, IL   (More by this author »)

I don’t remember
God.
I don’t remember
Receiving life,
Receiving a soul.
I don’t remember
Evolving;
Being naturally selected;
Being mutated.
I don’t remember
What’s in the dark
To fear.
I don’t remember
The sun
Ever saving me
From pain.
I don’t remember
Black or white
Because the world
Is gray.
Filled
With outlines
On the chart,
Drifting through
A world of
Schizophrenia,
Dementia,
And amnesia
Deciphering
Lies to truth,
Trying to expunge
The gray.
