By Gregory B., Armonk, NY

A heavy bolt of lightning
Struck against the barn
Banging out its innocence
A blanket of flames
Covered the roof
An intimidating sight
To any hero’s eyes
Surviving horses
Galloped for several miles
Escaping from the
Ghastly place
Their eyes told
The story
Bulging out and terrified
As they traveled through
The unknown forests
Oblivious
At school
I encountered
My friend
Whose face was
Drowned with tears
The words coming out
Of her mumbling mouth
Told the story
Of the flame-covered barn
The words stunned me
Like a fist
To the face
Clueless of
What to do
My car brought me
Toward fright and horror
Where I knew
There was much to do
Tears were trickling
Down my face
As I was washing
The smell of flames
On a panicky pony
Where is my horse?
I asked while scrubbing
Her mane
Where is my horse?
I asked while witnessing
Others hugging their
Surviving horses
Where is my horse?
I asked

Your horse is dead
