By Jaimie H., Clarence Center, NY

Scuffing her feet on this icy patch in the road
Hands jammed in her jean pockets
Because it’s going to be a long
Walk away from her home
The wind pushes her on her way
While her mind tries to contemplate the day
Overdue library books
Missing lock and life
A glare to the left
As she walks on the right
And words stacked to the rim
Of open pores in her skin
One step up but two steps down
She’s so ready to leave
The unearthly ground
Cracking the ice
As she slides around
She doesn’t mind
That the blood
Stains her hair
To a fiery-red
Because it’s getting
Clearer out
Mind still racing
But her body
Has gone
Limp.
