By Brian B., Arlington, MA

All is quiet in Whereton, the town where no one sleeps but children,

Everyone must work to earn a place to eat.

But why Mommy?

No one knows dear child,

But maybe it is ... well no one knows.

Maybe it is what Mommy?

Once, a long, long time ago,

Emperor Sung Suum saw several snakes sipping from a stream.

But why Mommy?

they were thirsty dear child,

Hush, I must finish the story.

Okay Mommy.

When Sung Suum saw the snakes,

He made a silly rule.

What was the rule Mommy?

No one may eat within twenty miles from the stream,

Unless they slither like a snake or work like a wolf.

But why Mommy?

No one knows child, perhaps we never will,

Poor Sung Suum is dead now, but his snake rule lives on.

But why Mommy?

You ask too many questions dear child,

And now it is time for bed.

But why Mommy?

This silly rule will not be understood,

And tomorrow is a long day, good night!
