By Melissa L., Arlington, MA

So, you thought I was yours

A keepsake, a trivial possession

And you thought I was bound

To such a dynamic person

As yourself

And you even believed

That I would wait

For beautiful, unloving you

But you were wrong

Oh, so very wrong

I am not yours

Or anyone's

I was never someone's treasure

The other half, the alter ego

I was never

Civilized, cultured

A human thing

I am always

Thistledown flying through the air

The restless waters of the ocean

And the star, whose brilliant radiance

You will never capture.
