By Cynthia P., Arlington, MA

   far in the distance,

some trees sighed

I looked up at them

all was still

I kept walking

the sun shone in my eyes

the rays I held back,

with my hand

the grass brushed,

my bare ankles

lazy insects sang,

as they flew about

I kept walking,

toward the trees

I entered the grove,

and looked back

silence

wind rustled the leaves

"What do you wish for?"

a shaft of light shone,

on me

"What would you wish?"

breathed the grove

"Me?" I said

silence

"More time, I guess,"

I finally spoke

silence

"Why?" it hummed

I thought

"I don't know,"

I whispered

silence

all around me

the grove sighed

the last rays,

of sunlight,

vanished
