The Truth Of War

By Amy P., Agawam, MA

Why don't I believe in the Patriotic?

The patriotic see the Great Battle -

My clouded vision sees the Great Waste.

Why do I shrug reality away?

I wish for peace without war

And I'm drowning in my own Utopian beliefs.

Forming a sea of crocodile tears

In a world too big for the small

Children who cling to their teddy bears

As life preservers.

My truth soothes, but burns others,

Upsetting their goals, igniting their anger

In order to burn their fears

Of the truth.

The truth of the children

Could sear a hole through the darkness

If we'd open our eyes to their words.

With my knowledge, I know nothing

Of what is given to me freely

In this wonderful beautiful country

To which I refuse to give anything

But my truth

Which it does not want.
