By Anonymous, Melrose, MA

   Something I have counted,

On which I have relied,

Is gone just like the morning dew,

Part of me has died.

The dream is over forever,

Suddenly this I know,

Like a splash of water,

On a glistening brow.

The crutch that I have leaned on,

When the world grew grey,

Has found a pretty maiden,

And simply slipped away,

I see him with his other,

And sigh, a little moan,

And feel the world grow grey again-

But this time I'm alone.
