Fallen Shelter

By Maggie W., Framingham, MA

I built a shelter around my heart after you left me.

Each day that went by without you

Put another layer around my heart.

When I thought my shelter was impenetrable

You called me on the phone to say hi.

The layers that took five months to build

Fell from around my heart in five minutes.

Now, you call me often, for a friend to talk to

when you get lonely.

Now my heart is bare and exposed.

And I am reminded of

How hard it was to forget you,

And when you leave me again,

When you stop calling me,

I'll have to stop loving you

Again.
