Thirst And Toenails

Teen Ink Blogs

By Maggie D., Swampscott, MA

   The shrill cries

echo in the coolness of the morning

Her stiff body slips and falls

as she tries to stand up.

Her toenails clink on the cold

of the linoleum floor.

She struts toward her bowl

for a drink of water

Collar dangling

like the sound of bells

As she laps the water

her thirst is quenched

and slowly she returns

to the comfort of her warm mattress
