By Karla B., Arlington Heights, IL   (More by this author »)

You sit on the shag rug
To your left, a bin filled with old Polaroids,
Dirtied around the edges from years of fingerprints
To your right, your old black Labrador
His tail thumps against the side of your nightstand
One picture catches your eye,
You in your favorite bathing suit,
The black one with red tulips
You were with your child, your little princess
You had stood in the pool,
The cool water crashed over your bare legs.
you didn’t know, just two hours later,
Your girl would be stolen from you
By a man who volunteered to end her life
One too many at the bar,
A green light,
A red light,
And the sound of metal colliding.
