I'm a former participant, and really recommend Global Scholar. I learned about important issues like poverty and conflict. We spent lots of time talking about how to do things to solve these problems, including visiting our senators, or organizing an event or project. I've been really interested in international affairs since I studied abroad, but Global Scholar really helped me put everything in perspective. Global Scholar is honestly one of the better summer programs that I've been a part of. Before doing Global Scholar the summer before my senior year of high school, I didn't really know yet what I wanted to pursue as a major in college (I mean, could you blame me, I was 16). I had traveled abroad the summer before and was really interested in talking about foreign affairs in all my AP classes, but I never really thought much of it. My daughter attended Global Scholar, and had a wonderful experience. She met so many fascinating speakers, and really gained a firm understanding of the global issues facing us all. She now "gets" current events, and I see her applying this knowledge to her studies. The program also helped build her confidence as a young woman who has the power to speak out about issues she cares about. I am a student who attended Global Scholar in the Summer of 2008. I am currently a freshman at American University in Washington D.C. double majoring in International Studies and Communications. I can honestly say that Global Scholar was the biggest catalyst in getting me where I am today. I was so inspired by the high school students who had such a zeal to learn about the world.
