The sound of rain pattering on my windows woke me up. Outside, I could hear the wind howling and rustling of the leaves. I clutched the covers more tightly and curled underneath. The alarm clock started beeping, reminding me that my day had started. I switched it off, turned over and told myself to sleep. But I couldn’t.
So, just like everyday, I forced myself out of bed and into the shower. The hot water streaming down my back felt cold. I was shivering by the time I had finished getting ready. I grabbed my pink sweater, and went downstairs to the kitchen, where my mother was making breakfast. She looked up and forced a smile. I could see the dark circles underneath her eyes, and I knew that she had not slept as well. We both grabbed our breakfast and sat down to a silent breakfast. I wanted to say something, anything, but I couldn’t. I could barely breathe, let alone speak. I reached over and took my mother’s hand to let her know that I was here, that I would always be here. We sat like that and let our food get cold. We only looked up to the sound of a car rolling up our path.
“That must be your grandmother. Come on, we can’t sit like this forever. We better get a move on. I’ll get the door. Why don’t you clean up the table?” My mother said. With that, she stood up and left. I stood up and went to the window. I peeked through the curtains and I saw my grandmother’s car before I heard her voice from the hallway.
“Oh, Ellen. It’s going to be okay, Ellen. Now, where’s Xena? Xena?” She walked into the dining room and gave me a big bear hug. I pulled away and managed a little smile.
“Hi, nana.”
“Oh Xena. Everything will be okay. I promise.” Tears started streaming down her face. I reached over and wiped it off. I knew I couldn’t start as well. I had to stay strong. Today was a big day. Today, we had a funeral.
