Seeing is believing

Ever heard the saying " seeing is believing?". I never thought much about this quotation, at least not until the events that eventuate on April first.

On April second I was driving to school, my drive is unusual than most juniors in high school. I drive the turn-pike for thirty minutes to get to school. Like I was saying I was driving when a quarter of a mile ahead of me I saw a diesel truck swerve. I immediately pulled to the side of the road, along with everyone else who was in the vicinity. The diesel collided with the wall of the highway, which threw him back into traffic. The diesel then ran over the top of a small white prius. The compact car was crushed completely. I knew the person inside couldn't be alive. The diesel finally stopped when it hit the opposite wall of the highway.
Everyone was climbing from their vehicles trying to help the truck driver. I jogged over to the crushed car and looked inside expecting to see something that would most definitely scar me for life, although what I saw did change my life.

I looked inside the driver window, which was completely smashed down, there was merely a two inch gap I was looking through. I saw a sweater and said " Are you alive?". I heard nothing for a moment then a muffled " Yeah". I was shocked, " are you hurt?", I asked knowing how stupid of a question I was asking. Then I heard it, a small cry of a child. I leaned closer to the car and saw a baby, couldn't have been older than a month or two in the women's arms. She was clutching the baby in her arms and neither of the two appared to be hurt. " no I'm not and I don't think he is either", the women said looking at me now. I looked in the backseat. The remains of a car seat, that was now crushed was all that was there. I looked at the woman again and asked " did you take him out of the seat before the crash?". The woman pared through the gap and said " He was screaming I couldn't get him to stop so I unbuckled him and he was in my lap when the truck ran over us, I don't know how we aren't hurt". I shook my head completely shocked. " I don't either.", I said standing up straight.

Hours later I was watching the five o'clock news when I saw the woman again. She was explaining the accident. I knew then that there was no way I would be able to explain to anyone what really happened, seeing really was believing.
