My name is Shadow, yes it’s very odd for a name, but you learn to deal with it. My parents are divorced and my father lives California and my mom in Ohio. So during the summer I travel to my dad’s the whole Season, and I usually don’t have fun. My mom said “Honey try to have fun this year, your 15! Girls your age envy you because each summer you go, so make it worth going this year.” I stated with an angry tone “I don’t care, all dad does is hang with his new family with the little baby, he doesn’t even pay attention to me!” So yeah, our family isn’t perfect. It never was.
My dad left us for a 20yr old when he is 35. Pathetic I think really, it made me angry when he told us the news. My mom sighed “I know, you have told me this over 20 times already, but he tends to be busy, but he loves you Shadow.” I laughed until my stomach hurt “Oh hahaha mom that’s really funny, if he did then why doesn’t he do anything with me while I’m there?” My mom looked worn out, so I sighed and said “Okay, fine I will quit complaining and continue to pack.” I silently went up the stairs to my room, and plopped on my bed and grabbed my laptop and checked my e-mail; there was one from my friend Lynsey.

“When you get this you really need to call me, it’s really important that you do it ASAP!” I thought “oh dear god what problem is she in now” and sighed. I grabbed my phone and called her she answered “Oh my god guess what!” I held the phone away from my ear and said “God Lynz, calm down and talk quieter” Her being the preppy type unlike me said “Opps my bad sorry, so are you going to ask me or what!?” I laughed “Okay tell me what happened” I prepared myself for her rambling, it happens every time.
“Well I went to a party last night, and there was this guy there and we started talking and everything; and you know how I go to Florida during the summer, turned out he lived where I go EVERY YEAR, but I have never saw him before and he said that he just moved there a couple months but came here to visit a couple friends” I was confused and said “Um, so..?” She gasped “Really you don’t care this guy likes me?” I sighed “Of course I do, but you made me lose 20 precious minutes of my last day in Ohio to tell me and ramble on about this, plus I still have to pack and its already 4:00 and I have friends to see before I leave and things to do”
She replied with “Well sorry, I forgot you leave tomorrow, it was only 2 days ago the last day of school and you don’t come back until the last week of summer break” I now felt bad for lying to her AND getting angry at her, we never do see each other over summer break. I sighed into the phone “Sorry for getting mad I know you don’t like that I do this at all. But I am forced by my mother every year to go, or I wouldn’t go.” She quietly talked to someone in the background and said “Hey, I have to go, if I don’t call before you leave have a safe trip, I love you!” and she hung up before I could say anything else. “Well back to packing” I said to myself.
I was packing when my mom called me to dinner, I ran down stairs and smelt the food and thought yummy and asked “What did you make that smells so good!?” my mother just laughed “Well Shadow you ought to know by now what it is we have it all the time” I must of looked confused because she said “It’s your favorite!” and then I laughed “Of course it is mom” and I went and set the table for us. We didn’t talk much during dinner and when it was done it was 6:30, and I released I packed for 2 hours straight. “Mom, sorry for the rush thanks for dinner I have to go do some things before I leave, love you bye!” before she could say anything I was out the door, I thought “wow I only have 2 hours not even before I am off to Cali” “I can’t believe it” I said out loud. I hopped into my car and drove to the park; it was one of my favorite things to do before I left each year. I walked over to the swing and sat down and got out my IPod and listened to music for a while. I looked at the time 7:00 and thought “Crap! This is bad” and I ran to my car. I called my mom “Hey mom, can you finish packing my few things and bring them down, I will be home in 10.” Before she said anything I hung up. She was waiting for me when I got there and I helped her put my stuff in the car’s trunk. My mother said “You’re going to have to drive fast to be on time” I replied curtly “I know this.” And she got into the passenger’s seat.
So it was by the time I got there 8:00 and the plane leaves at 8:30, I said to mom “Hey mom you can go back now, I have everything and it will be easier for me just to be by myself going through this faster to.” I don’t think she liked this idea because she had a frown on her face. I told her “Mom, I do this every year I know what to do.” She sighed “Yea, I know your even more responsible now then you were last year so I guess you can go.” We gave each other hugs and said goodbye before I went off on my own. I was walking to get into line and noticed people were staring at me. See I hate when people do that, I think I am ugly when they do it, or I have something on my face or in my hair.
So I just ignored them and walked on, they called my plane RIGHT after I sat down and I sighed and said out loud but quietly to myself “Here we go again to another boring summer.” I got on; laid back and turned on my IPod and for the rest of the plane ride I slept and tuned the people out by my music. When I landed my and got my stuff I saw my dad’s driver waiting for me, and before you ask, yes he is rich, but I could care less about him. I put my stuff in the trunk and got in, “Hello to another boring summer” I said out loud to myself because no one else was in the limo with me.
It was around noon when I got to my dad’s house and when I got there, I found a note on the counter saying “Sorry sweetie family problems see you when I get home.” “Very casual dad” I said standing there, so I decided why not go to the beach for a run then cool off with a swim, so I changed into my gym shorts and a tank top and started my run. While I was changing my song on my IPod and wasn’t looking I accidently bumped into someone, I looked up and saw a really cute scene, yes scene, not one of the preppy blonde guys with blue eyes. I said “Sorry I was changing my song and wasn’t looking” He chuckled “I see, well you know what, you should pay attention this is rather crowded” I sighed “I’m not stupid I come here every summer and all the time I come here my dad’s always too busy doing something else.” He laughed “Well sorry then, so you owe me now since you ran into me” I replied with “Do I have to?” He looked amused and his green eyes sparkled with it. “Well of course you do, but I am easy and will let you off with only having to buy me some ice cream” I laughed “Fine, fine, but can we walk to the beach, its hot and I was heading there anyways then you can get your ice cream.” I started to walk anyways without waiting for him to say anything “Well okay then, but can I ask you your name before I start walking with you” He said. “Shadow is my name, and walk faster or I will make you jog.” He said jokingly “I would never want to jog! And nice name my name is River”
I must have looked shocked because he said “You’re not the only person with an odd name you know”. I replied with “Nope, I didn’t know that because I am the only one in my small dinky town with one.” He looked surprised when I said that. “So you don’t live here..?” I said “Nope come here every summer though to visit my dad who doesn’t pay one bit of attention to me.” He laughed “Well then Shadow, where DO you live..?” I said “Ohio” we continued walking without talking until we got to the beach “Well let’s get you your ice cream so you can be on your way and not have me bother you any longer” I said. He looked surprised “Actually you don’t have to get me any if you just let me hang on the beach with you” he replied. I sighed playfully “Oh do you have to?” He laughed “Yup you do have to because you owe me.” I then ran off to find a spot where I can set down my towel and sports bag I had on my back and he appeared right there in front of me “Did you really have to make me run in this dang heat?” I said “I did it so you can to” I then pulled off my shirt and shorts and looked at him, “So are you coming in the water or just going to look at me swimming?” He said “Be patient I am coming in give me a second” I laughed “Stop being slow and come on if you’re coming, because I do NOT want to wait in this heat”
He took off his shorts and I ran into the water him trailing behind me. I was swimming under the waves when I felt something grab my ankle and went to get air and see who it was or what it was. It was River. “Why did you grab my ankle” I said annoyed, “Because you’re not paying attention and I needed to get yours.” I was confused “Why…?” He laughed “Because you owe me and you are not hanging out with me.” I thought “Well, if you want I can text my dad and see if you can hang with me tomorrow afternoon...” His eyes lit up “Yea, you should really do that” He said laughing. I continued messing around with him, he was dunking me and everything, and I made him give me a piggy back ride back to where my towel was. I checked my cell phone and saw the time was 5:00 and I had 1 missed call. “River, sorry I have to go back its late and I think my dad is actually worried, shocking!” He laughed “Okay, mind if I walk with you?” I thought for a moment, “Hmm walk alone or have someone walk with me, you can come, and I’m surprised you asked” I said laughing. We walked along joking and laughing at each other, I finally seen where I had to get off the walking/bike trail “Well this is where I have to stop walking on the trail, see you tomorrow?” We gave each other our numbers before we even stopped walking. “Yea, you better keep your promise to.” He laughed, “See you later!” I called after he left, I wonder if I like this guy, I’m pretty sure I do and I laughed at the thought. “Maybe this summer isn’t going to be too bad I said to myself”
