The Girl On The Train

The train whistled by the woodland, I watched out the window.
Girl: “Where are we going?” She whispered, I leaned back in my seat, looking for the person that spoke, between the cracks I watched her whisper in his ear.
Boy: “It’s a surprise.” He whispered back, smiling a smile that made her smile, too.
Girl: “Yeah, but I don’t like surprises.” She mumbled, protesting sweetly. I watched (jealously) as he grabbed her hand.
Boy: “I know, but I just love surprising you,” He said, playing with her hair. “I promise you’ll love it.”
Girl: “You promise?” She looked up at him, her blue eyes wide with anticipation.
Boy: “I promise you, forever and ever.”
Girl: “But how do you know I’ll love it?”
Boy: “Because I know you more than anyone in this whole wide world,” He kissed her cheek gently, standing up. “I’ll be right back, just going to the restroom,”
Girl: “Okay,” She leaned back in her seat, sighing as she watched him go.
But she didn’t know, she didn’t know that just a moment ago he had gone to get lemonade only to call another girl, who knew another story, another girl that was being played, maneuvered, and manipulated.
It went like this:
Boy: “Hey.”
Girl 2: “Hi. Where are you?” I heard her ask rudely from where I stood in the corner of the drink car.
Boy: “Just on the train. I’m going to ditch her once we get to the amusement park.”
Girl 2: “Good. I can’t wait to see you.”
Boy: “Me, too.” He said smiling, and I can tell now as I watch the first girl, the tricked girl, that the phone girl is the one he really loved by the way he smiled real when he heard her voice.

Girl: “You heard him talking on the phone, didn’t you?” She said, talking to me.
Me: “Excuse me?”
Girl: “Ever since he cheated on me the first time, I rigged his phone so I can see all his texts and stuff,”
Me: “Why are you still with him?”
She smiled at me then, like I just didn’t get it, I suppose I still don’t.
Girl: “Because revenge is my specialty, because I deserve better than him and I know I’m going to find a boy someday, who treats me fair, and cares about me, and smiles real when he’s around me,”
I stood up then, scrawling my cell number on a napkin and set it in her lap.
Me: “Call me when you do,”
Girl: “I promise.” I looked knowingly at her, stifling a laugh. “For real,” She said, I knew she meant it.
I walked out of the car then, and on my way I passed the boy, and whispered this in his ear:
“Someday, I hope you find someone who makes you better. I hope you realize how awful you really are,”
He started at me weird, but I just kept walking.

10 years later:
The phone was ringing, I look at the clock and it’s three forty-seven in the morning. I don’t know the number. I sit back in bed. My message plays, and then I hear:
Girl: “Hi, I found him. I promised you I would call, so here I am, calling you. I found him! He’s so wonderful, he treats me fair, and cares, and he smiles like he’s got the whole word, like he’s so lucky. I’m sorry to call so late, but I was just sitting in bed, and realized that I found him, that I love him. So, thank you. I don’t know you’re name, or who you are, or what your story is—“
I picked up phone, and pressed talk.
Me: “Hello?”
Girl: “Hi,”

I love this story so much! There's just something about knowing that everything worked out OK in the end that is so satisfying!
