I sighed, algebra was usually my favorite subject, but the day was dragging along and frankly I would rather be at home. I dialed in the combination for my locker and lifted the latch. Stupid lock, these school lockers were never opening right. Come to think about it the only person who could open the lockers the first time, every time was my best friend, Kei. “Hey” I said as she approached for our walk to algebra. She quickly fix my dilemma, and I smiled, she was the best.
“You doing anything tonight?” she asked then she rolled her eyes, she already knew the answer, but that wasn’t surprising my social life consisted of hanging out with my friends, who also had no social life.“What do you think? We do have that algebra test tomorrow you want to come over after school and study?” I replied we hung out almost every day doing homework.
“Ugg! Studying cant we just have chick flick night?” she complained as we grabbed our books and walked to class. “Fine, but we have to study too, you can’t handle another failed test on your record” I started rolling my eyes. Amanda walked past us knocking my books to the ground, she was the most evil, heartless, cruelest person I had ever met. I hated her, she had sought to ruin every day of my life ever since my first day of preschool when Max, who I had known for my entire life had shared his animal crackers with me rather than her! I know stupid, right! “sorry,” she jeered, “but there’s no cure for clumsyitus,”
I turned toward her and simply answered her smirk with, “at least I have a brain,” Some passing 6th graders laughed at Amanda. She glared at them and they knew that they were toast, and ran for the farthest corner of the school. I didn’t blame them, they were the bottom of the food chain in our school, and Amanda was the top of the food chain she would eat them for breakfast. She now looked at me with pure loathing. “you win this round dork but I’m winning the war,” she sneered then put on a pretty air head smile for Max, who walked up and wrapped his arm around her, as much as I hated her there was a part of me that wished I was where she was at that moment.
“I know that look,” Kei commented on my pure longing expression, “give up he is so not worth it.” We walked to algebra; I was upset about the whole Amanda thing. “hey why don’t you invite the others and we’ll talk about how to get back at her, and we can stop at the store on the way to your house, I’ll buy brownies,” Kei said half-way through algebra when I broke my fifth mechanical pencil. Mr. Anderson glared at her; I waited a few minutes then answered, “Sure we’ll talk to them at lunch,”
“Would you and Ms. Kei like to share something more important with the class?” Mr. Anderson asked sarcastically. “No Mr. Anderson,” we chanted in unison, then resulted to passing notes and decided on the same movies we always watched. And the same snacks plus brownies. Finally the bell releasing us for lunch rang, our teacher shouting reminders at us as we all ran for the best tables. I grabbed the best table and the table that we sat at every day. It was close enough to the air vent so you got cool after P.E. but not so close that you froze. Maia, Jaz, and Elvina came and sat down. We all pulled out sack lunches and dumped them on the table. Lunch was like pot luck we all just ate whatever no matter if we brought it or not. We all dug in, as I said, “hey, you all want to come over tonight for movies and the usual,”
“Depends is it going to be chick flicks” Jasper asked, he had been cursed to have been read wrong when his mom got an ultrasound. They had said girl, his parents picked Jasper for a name, and now he’s stuck with it. “Well duh, when do we ever watch anything different on movie nights,” Kei retorted staring at him in mock shock.
“Ugg I’m never going to get any other guy friends if I keep watching chick flicks,” he complained, baby. “true, but you might get a girlfriend,” I replied, “girls are into sensitive guys.” Amanda walked by with Max’s arm around her and gave me a smug smile. I watch as they sat down and started talking, Max must have said something that made her upset because she stormed off. On the way she stopped by and squirted ketchup in my face. “You know I’m going to lose the only rep I’ve got if I keep hanging out with you,” Elvina commented as I wiped the ketchup off my face with a napkin.
“What rep?” Maia retorted, looking at her sarcastically, “you don’t have a rep.”
“hey, come on I’m stopping at the store and getting brownies and popcorn and I’ll even rent a guy movie for Jaz,” I said compromising, the bell rang and we all left for class. Thank god I only had one more class and then I got to go home, the only problem was I had to sit next to Amanda. And from how she acted earlier she wasn’t letting my comment go. I walked drearily toward art class, my portfolio under my arm. Then to complete my horrible day who should show up but Amanda, ugg here comes Jazback.
“Chandra, Chandra wait up,” she called running to catch up, “listen, hear me out I want to apologize for earlier I shouldn’t have said the things I did.”What was she playing at? “What do you want?” I answered calling her bluff. “Fine you caught me; I want you to come to my sleep over Saturday.” She answered looking sincere, but I saw right through it.
“Yeah right so you can get Jazback and shave my head while I sleep. In your dreams” I replied walking away. She continued to fallow me, persisting she was sincere. “Please, I need to talk to someone I can trust. My other friends would laugh at me,” she pleaded the look in her eyes was as sincere as you could get, but she was a good liar. Ever since I was little I had been able to tell when people were lying, the only flaw was Amanda I could never tell.
“Fine I’ll think about it, but I make no promises,” I answered slowly phrasing it as not to trap myself into something. Making a deal with Amanda was like making a deal with a demon, you have to make sure you don’t promise it anything. It was good enough for her she hugged me. I survived art with puzzling thoughts about what she was planning. The bell rang and drove the thoughts far from my mind. I met Kei and we started the walk toward my house.
“Is something up you seam distant,” Kei asked snapping her fingers to get my attention as I almost walked across a busy street.
“Yeah, do you think the ‘Queen’ could ever slip off her pedestal?” I asked referring to our name for Amanda. “Well you know the bigger they are the harder they fall, why?” she replied giving me a puzzled look.
“Amanda just said that she trusts me more than her friends.” I explained the entire incident as we walked into the store. But she agreed that Amanda was up to something. I walked up to the register and handed the cashier the brownies, popcorn, and movie. “Will that be all?” he asked ringing up the brownies and handing me the bag. We walked out and headed down the street. We walked passed a hobo selling alcohol for a living. “You two want some beer.” He asked he had shoulder length black hair and jet black eyes.
“We’re 14 looser,” I retorted walking away quickly. I looked back over my shoulder to see if he was going to fallow us but he was just sitting there staring at us. I blinked and he was gone, I thought about telling Kei but decided to push the weirdness out of my head. She must have noticed something because she was thinking about something; I decided not to peruse it, because tonight was our night to relax. We reached my house shortly and I unlocked the door and called, “hey mom!”
“Hi honey,” a voice came from the kitchen, “listen I have to go into work tonight are you going to be alright here.”I nodded giving her a hug. “Yeah; Jaz, Maia, and Elvina are coming over and we’re going to watch some movies,” I replied walking into the kitchen. My mom was packing snacks and her laptop into her work bag.
“Alright, well I promise to be home by midnight,” she said giving me a kiss and walking out the door. No more than five minutes passed before I heard the door open. “Hey,” Elvina called as they walked in. “We’re in the kitchen,” I called back, “you want to order pizza,”
“Sure,” they answered in unison, so I picked up the phone and ordered our usual; half meat lovers, half vegetarian. I put in the movie I had picked out for Jaz and popped some pop corn. We all sat down as the words “transformers” came on screen, Jaz’s favorite movie. We sat down and relaxed. The movie was almost over when the door bell rang; I grabbed the money and opened the door. But it wasn’t the normal Pizza guy it was Max. “I didn’t know you were delivering now?” I said as he looked up.
“Oh, yeah, it’s a job and I need to get money for a car, the total is $10.70.” he answered handing me the pizza, and I handed him the $20 I had. He reached for the change in his pocket.
“No the rest is a tip,” I said stopping him.
“No that’s way too much,”
“no let it go to your car fund!” I joked leaning on the door jam, “I’m sure Amanda wil drain that quick enough.”
“yeah, I guess, do you want to go to a movie tomorrow? I promise no gooshy love stories but maybe Friday the thirteenth, its playing down at
the dollar theater. ” He asked stashing the money. “sounds awesome,” I answered wish it was already tomorrow. “Cool I’ll pick you up at 5 o’clock,” he said walking away. I closed the door and sighed, I found it weird that for so long he was just looked like a friend and now I was seeing him as a boyfriend.
“pizza‘s here,” I called walking into the room. We all grabbed our favorite slice; Kei the farthest from veggie, Jaz any meat slice, Maia combo of both but slightly more veggie than meat, Elvina all veggie, and me half and half. “Ray is Maggie home?” Elvina asked taking a bite of pizza.
“No she’s performing at the dog show in Vancouver this week with my dad,” I answered taking another bite of pizza wondering why she was asking about my dog. “Why?”
“Because just heard something outside and I was hoping it was her,” she answered as I got up and walked to the back window. I pulled the curtains back a small sliver. I gasped and dropped my pizza. I was staring at a pack of huge wolves, and I mean huge they had to have be a steroid experiment gone wrong. There were maybe five of six in the backyard all had a strange gray crescent moon on their backs. I ran and locked all the doors and windows down stairs, while I was running everyone had gone to look out the window. “Cr*p!” Kei whispered beginning to pace, “Chandra that won’t do anything. We have to leave now!”
“Are you insane you want us to go outside where those things are?” I whispered franticly turning around to see Jaz had picked up my slice of pizza off the ground and was eating it. “No, that would be stupid. We have to leave, leave.” She whispered back, “you have ten minutes before they break down that door.” she ordered handing me a leather pack, I knew that I should pack things I need. I ran up to my room and grabbed my phone and blanket. I quietly stuffed them into my pack while Kei wasn’t looking. I went to turn off the movie but Kei grabbed my arm, “no,” she whispered, “We want them to think that we don’t know they’re there.”
All of us froze when there was a knock at the door. I ran and peeked out the front window, and held my breath. I let it out in relief, it was just Max. Wait Max, cr*p. I opened the door, grabbed him by the neck of his shirt and yanked him inside. Then I locked the door again. “Whoa, I just came over to tell you that the movie was changed,” he said.
“Shhh, come with me,” I whispered rushing back into the other room. “We’re ready Ra- what’s he doing here,” Kei asked referring to Max. “Nice to see you too?” he replied slightly sarcastic not understanding, I pulled him over to the window and showed him the wolves. Jaz reached over to pack the pizza into his pack, I turned sharply.
“Do we have the time?” I asked sarcastically.
“she’s right, Fallow me,” she whispered motioning to go up stairs, we nodded. We quickly crept up the stairs. But something made me stop at the top. There was a thud, thud from someone throwing their weight against my back door. I recognized the sound from when me and Kei had locked Max and Jaz out as kids, they nearly busted down the door trying to get their toys back. I made a motion to hurry, Kei understood. There was a bang of the door falling, Kei turned back moving past me as one of the wolves grabbed Jasper by the foot. He wiggled out of his shoe and Kei raised her hands and muttered something in Latin.
“come on that wont hold for long!” she shouted as we rushed down the hall to the closet. Kei opened the door, but it wasn’t my closet it was a glittering veil leading to a forest! Max was at the front, he hesitated as if unsure to trust it. Jaz moved to the front and pushed him through, the others didn’t wait. I tossed Kei my bag, She made a move to throw me through but I pushed her through first. I heard a loud bang like the firing of a gun, so I quickly started to step through. As I reached back for the door knob I saw something that will haunt me forever. A large black dog the size of a large lion was staring at me; his fur was midnight, his teeth glistening pearl daggers, and his eyes were evil sapphires. I heard a voice in my head coaxing, “come here Ana, I wont hurt you. I’m friendly.” It made me want to walk toward him and pet him. I started to take a step but I was yanked roughly through the veil thing by the neck of my shirt.
“You doing anything tonight?” she asked then she rolled her eyes, she already knew the answer, but that wasn’t surprising my social life consisted of hanging out with my friends, who also had no social life.“What do you think?
