Lunessa chapter 2

The door slammed behind me, and Kei began muttering over it. It was solitary no wall, just standing there as if it had always been. I half fell, half sat on a rock breathing heavily. I looked around and found we were in a forest, there were a lot of trees but other things as well like weird mushrooms and small dragon like things. It was quiet for several minutes, and then Maia plucked up the courage to ask what was on all of our minds. “What the h*** was that all about?” she asked getting up. Kei stood there quietly for a minute tilting her head back and forth as if debating something then replied struggling, “well I can’t tell you, yet.”

“Why not!” I shouted kind of p***ed that a took a leap of faith and I wasn’t going to know anything. “Shut up, Drake has guards everywhere! Do you wish to die? I’ll explain soon but we need some where safe.” Kei explained walking away.

“Safe! We are who knows where, running from some danger only you know about,” I shouted fallowing her. She just kept walking, why was she ignoring me? What was going on? Why did I have so many questions? Ugh another question. “This isn’t funny!” I said and reached forward and grabbed her upper arm. I pulled her to face me, “I fallowed you, and all I want is an explanation, what were those things back there?”

“Fine, you won’t like the answer,” she started gesturing for me to sit on a boulder, “does this place look familiar at all?” I nodded, “Now that you mention it, it does, Where are we?” I had never been camping before, certainly not here I thought as a miniature dragon crawled next to my hand and began to use it as a pillow.

“Lunessa,” she said as she started pacing across some very green grass, “this started a long time ago. Your father was the prince of Lunessa he had just turned 21; he was required to take a bride to gain the throne from his father. A grand ball was thrown so he may choose any woman he wanted. And he did, he had found your mother but his father had not counted on him falling for her. She was a servant, and he thought she was worthless. But your father had chosen her, he had no choice. Ten months later your mother had your brother Drake. Naturally he would get the thrown as he planned for 16 years. Then you were born a baby who had just screwed up his plan. You had bad luck from the day you were born. Within the hour a masked killer had entered the villa your parents were staying in. You were handed to me for protection the only place I could think of that was safe was earth. So that’s where I took you, I left you on a door step and watched until someone came to the door. There you’ve lived happily until now.”

“Well…what?” I asked, “what about Drake?” she paused a moment, “he had planned the whole thing; I found out later that he had sent Death to kill you but your parents protected you.” I sat for a moment absorbing it all. “So basically my entire family is dead except this Drake dude, who wants to kill me,” I said not sure what to think.

“yup,” she remarked sitting down. “Wait a minute how old are you?!” I asked giving her a funny look. “14,” she answered, “I age differently. You remember that book that came out about vampires and werewolves by Stephanie whatsit. Well most of the stuff is true; I can’t age until I find my ‘true love’ as she put it.”

“Really?” I asked not really believing her. “Yes really. This world calls people like me shifters, I can change into a wolf but others can change into things like large cats or birds I’ve met someone who turned into a rabbit. But the most common animal is a wolf.”

“Wait, a giant rabbit,” I asked incredulously raising an eyebrow. “Oh no a regular rabbit, he excelled at getting away,” she replied smiling, “that was until a hawk caught him.” “So, what do we do now?” I asked confused. What was going to happen? I didn’t really know if I was ready to take control of a nation. Or even meet this person face to face. “Well you’re going to have to fight him some time in the next four months. Because if you don’t do it by then he will be king for good, he changed the law so he will have ultimate control at age 18 and at the moment he is 17. Four months from now he will turn 18, well it’s your birth right but he won’t give it up without a fight. Chandra I know you are the last person to fight someone but Drake is a tyrant, millions have already died and millions more will die if you don’t help. I heard him planning a takeover of the earth when he was a kid, knowing him he won’t give up. Even if you go home it will only be a matter of time.”

“What if I can’t?” I asked only to realize the answer myself. I would die and so would all I cared about. Heck! From the way Kei was talking that was the optimist in me. I would probably be put through my fears again and again for his amusement. “How can I do it? I’m barely trained with first aid.”

“well that’s where you’re wrong you have abilities, powers, magic whatever you want to call it,” she replied, “I know this is way too much to ask but you can do this, this is you’re right.”

She thought of my originally question and relied, “those things were shifters that shifted for a person doing his bidding, they retained no will of their own, they’ve been reduced to nothing more than a pet.” She let the words fall out of her mouth like she was discussed with the thought of it. “most of them no longer have the ability to shift, or even speak. They are literally reduced to animals the only form of communication is telepathy. Chandra in this world telepathy is the lowest of our instincts even for humans if you were to stoop to your lowest survival instincts you could communicate telepathically.”

“Really” Maia asked I hadn’t realized they had fallowed me out here. Everyone had seated themselves on various rocks here and there. At that moment I knew if I had my friends, and I know this sounds corny but, I could fight this man. “Listen I know that this is asking way too much of all of you and if you don’t want to come then you can leave at any time, I won’t begrudge you.” I said, “this is dangerous I don’t know how much you heard but there is a man after me he wants me dead, and chances are that if you come and he finds us he will kill you too.”

“I’m not leaving this is getting interesting!” Maia answered laughing, she always did like adventure but this might be too much. “Me neither,” replied Elvina and Jaz, I needed them too. I turned to Max he was the last one and the one I trusted most next to Kei. He nodded smiling, I smiled back I was glad he was coming.

“we need a hide out somewhere near a village so we have supplies, but not too close to any major town,” Kei started muttering to herself, “we could go into a town and rent a room under a false name, but that’s risky if he’s doubled his security.”

“How would he know we escaped already it’s only been an hour,” I asked confused even if they had flowed us though the door it looked like it would take days to reach anywhere.“Well that’s complicated time passes differently here; 4 hours here is a day there.” Kei explained, “but time only passes that way if the heir, you, are here otherwise it passes like earth time. But since you are here, they’ve had hours to contact him.”

“Let’s focus on the guy who wants to kill us for a second,” Elvina interjected, “what about that mountain there has to be at least one cave that would provide shelter. And it looks perfect for mining which means there has to be a town.”

“That mountain,” Kei asked almost laughing, “yeah there’s a town up there, but that mountain is also supposed to be filled with thieves, murderers, bandits, and outlaws…perfect!”
