Emptiness

/I don't belong here./ The words followed her wherever she turned. /This is not who I am./ The thought came to her as she sat through class or walked through the mall with her friends. /This is not my life./ The idea rose in her heart when she lay awake at night, dreaming for something more. Something more than clothes, makeup, friends or gossip. There was a longing, an ache deep inside that rose whenever she stopped long enough to breathe.

There had to be an adventure, a place where normal things didn't matter...a life that was worth living. Or was there? Was there anything more than what she had?

Deri kicked at the ground, her boyfriend's jacket around her shoulders. Her head whirled with questions, schedules...and emptiness. Everything rang hollow. The question voiced itself again. In desperation, Deri spoke it aloud for the first time. "Is there something more?" The wind blew lazily through the trees. She looked around. Has she heard something? A voice? Deri stopped and glanced over her shoulder. The fields were empty - the country road was clear of the occasional traffic. She heard it again. "Deriwynn." No one was around. No one was around. Deri turned a full circle. "Who are you?" The field vanished; a dense forest appeared in its place. A small winding footpath disappeared between the trees. "Follow the path Deriwynn." The voice came again, strange and familiar...answering an ache in her soul.

Looking around one final time a the world she knew, Deri took a step forward, leaving her old life behind.

She stepped onto the path. Everything vanished.
