Nina is still dancing and singing.

DYLAN
(annoyed)
Oh my God! I missed my turn.

NINA
That’s ok. Making mistakes is apart of life.

ASHA
I’ve never missed a turn.

DYLAN
You don’t drive.

Nina sees a SEVEN ELEVEN.

NINA
Ahh!

DYLAN AND ASHA
Ah!

DYLAN
What?

NINA
Pull over. There’s a Seven Eleven!

DYLAN
We have to get to Walmart.

NINA
We have time. Come on... I want a slushee...

Dylan looks to Asha.

Asha shrugs her shoulders.

Dylan pulls off the road to the Seven Eleven.

NINA
Yay! (Chanting) slushee! Slushee!

INT. DYLAN’S CAR - LATER
Dylan is driving. Asha is in the driver’s seat, and Nina is in the back seat.

NINA
(sighing)
Now don’t y’all feel better?

DYLAN
No, not really.

ASHA
Now I just have a mediocre drink and a sticky hand.

NINA
You want a wet wipe? I have one in my bag.

ASHA
No that’s ok.

NINA
Don’t worry. I got you.

ASHA
It’s really ok.

Nina takes off her seat belt and bends over the chair to rummage through the back to find her bag.

ASHA
(getting annoyed)
It’s really fine. I have a napkin.

NINA
It’s really not a problem.

ASHA
You really shouldn’t take off your seat belt.

DYLAN
(whispering)
Should I slam on the brakes?

ASHA
 I have a napkin. It’s fine.

Nina finds her bag and starts look through it, still bent over the chair.

NINA
But a wipe will clean it better.

ASHA
I...

NINA
Found it!

Nina hands it to Asha.

Asha takes it.

AHSA
(Still annoyed)
Thanks.

NINA
Your welcome!

Pause

NINA
Ooh!

Asha and Dylan jump at the out burst.

ASHA AND DYALN
WHAT?

NINA
There’s a Taco Bell.

Asha makes a dramatic breath.

ASHA
Let me guess... You want to stop?

NINA
Well, the slushee did kinda ignite my hunger.

DYLAN
We’re not stopping again.

NINA
(begging)
Please...

DYLAN
No.

NINA
We could all get something.

DYLAN
I’m not hungry.

ASHA
Neither am I.

NINA
Please... I’ll clean all the bathrooms when we get back.

Asha smiles a little bit and looks at Dylan.

DYLAN
Ok.

NINA
Yay!

MR. LEIGHTON
Oh, she’s out running errands for me.

EDITH
How long do you think she’ll be?

MR. LEIGHTON
(checking his watch)
uh.... Maybe an hour.

EDITH
Ok, I’ll wait.

DYLAN
How bout some tacos?

NINA
Soft or hard?

ASHA
Soft.

NINA
Chicken or beef?

DYLAN
Beef.

NINA
(disguested)
I don’t know.

DYLAN
Burrito?

NINA
Maybe.

ASHA
Bowl?

DYLAN
Quesadilla?

ASHA
Nachos?

NINA
OOOH NACHOS

DYLAN
(speaking to the worker.)
Ok, I’m ready to order.

WORKER
Ok, what would you like?

DYLAN
I want-

NINA
Two soft shell beef tacos with lettuce and cheese!

Dylan and Asha look at each other, so annoyed with Nina.

INT. THRIFT STORE - CONTINUOUS
Edith is walking around the store, browsing at items.

INT. DYLAN’S CAR - LATER
Dylan is driving. Asha is in the driver’s seat, and Nina is in the back seat.

Nina has a stuff animal that says “hopeful.”
She also has a new bag and a Starbucks coffee.

DYLAN
There’s no way we’re are making it back in time now.

NINA
Nothing’s impossible.

ASHA
No, this is literally impossible. We’re supposed to be back now.

NINA
Hey! There’s the Walmart.

DYLAN

Finally, we’re done.

ASHA
Thank God.

They continue walking towards the registers.

They pass by the pet aisle.

Nina stops.

NINA
OOOH! Let’s look at the puppy toys.

DYLAN
No

INT. THIRFT STORE - LATER

DYLAN
Hey, Edith.

NINA
Hi!

Asha continues on to the backroom.

EDITH
(talking to Dylan)
I’ve been waiting for you.

DYLAN
What’s up?

Nina lingers by Dylan’s side.

EDITH
I wanted to talk.

Dylan notices that Nina isn’t leaving.

DYLAN
(talking to Nina)
Go put the waters down in the backroom.

NINA
Yes, m’am.

Dylan hates being called m’am.

Nina leaves.

DYLAN
Whatcha want to talk about?

EDITH
I was cleaning out my garage a couple days ago when I found this.

Edith holds out a triangular shaped rock that is glowing.
Dylan stares at it.

DYLAN
It’s beautiful. What is it?

EDITH
It’s why I have been married for sixty years and have three beautiful children and seven generous grand babies.

DYLAN
So..I mean. What?

EDITH
It’s a shooting star. It’s been passed down from generations to generations. I got it from my mom and my mom got it from my grandma. It brings good luck. It has made my family extremely wealthy and successful.

DYLAN
A shooting star?

EDITH
Yes, my great great grandma was out on her farm when she saw this shooting star. It flew all around the night sky until it dropped right in front of her feet.

DYLAN
(laughing)
Are you messing with me?

EDITH
No! I am telling the truth. This is why my family is the way it is.

DYLAN
Well, then, what are you doing with it here?

EDITH
I’m giving it to you.

DYLAN
But… I thought you said it was a family tradition. What about your children?

EDITH
They’re all boys. It has to be given to a woman.

DYLAN
Why?

EDITH
It just does. Do you want it?

DYLAN
I don’t know.

EDITH
Oh come on… It would make all your dreams come true

DYLAN
I could really use some good luck.

EDITH
That’s wonderful! I bet you’ll have everything you’ve ever wanted by the end of next week. When my mom gave me the rock, I was failing college and struggling to pay my rent. Then, after one week of having the rock, my grade went from an F to a B, and a man at work gave me a generous tip that covered my rent.

Dylan is shocked at what Edith is telling her.

DYLAN
Are you serious?

EDITH
I would never lie to you.

DYLAN
Ok then, I’ll take it! Thank you!

EDITH
Your welcome.

Asha comes walking past Dylan and Edith.

ASHA
What’s that?

Dylan goes to answer but Edith cuts her off.

EDITH
It’s a family heirloom. I was just showing it to Dylan.

ASHA
Oh, ok.

Dylan is still staring at the rock.

EDITH
I have to go now. I have to go pick up my husband at the airport. He just got back from his work trip in Hawaii.

DYLAN
(not looking up from the rock)
Ok, bye.

INT. TAYLOR RESIDENCE. LIVING ROOM - LATER
Dylan is home from the thrift store. She is laying on the couch watching tv.

Ginny is sitting on the couch with her lap top.

GINNY
I ran into AJ today.

DYLAN
(eyes on tv)
Ok.

GINNY
I was running at the park. He was painting.

DYLAN
(eyes still on tv)
ok.

GINNY
He told...

Dylan is annoyed that her mom is interrupting her show. She pauses it because she cannot hear it with her mom talking.

GINNY
Me to tell you that he said hi.

DYLAN
(looking at Ginny)
Ok.

GINNY
Tell me I was right.

DYLAN
What?

GINNY
He likes you.

DYLAN
No he does not.

GINNY
Then why did he tell me to tell you that he said hi.

DYLAN
Because he was just being nice.

GINNY
He didn’t have to do that.

DYLAN
That’s what being nice is. You don’t have to but you do it because you want to appear nice. Anyway all he ever talks about with me is you, so maybe he likes you.

GINNY
Dylan, please.

Dylan resumes her show.

DYLAN
He doesn’t like me.

Ginny is annoyed, so she leaves the room.

The author's comments:

This piece is about how your mindset can completely control the outcome of your life. Nina represents an optimistic person, while Dylan and Asha represent pessimists. This is just an expert, so Nina's positive outlook on life is used for comedy in these scenes. However, in the whole screenplay Nina's positive outlook allows for good things to happen to her, while Dylan's pessimism only brings worse things for her.
