My teacher recommended that I should try my hand at poetry. The problem is, I have never written a decent poem before. Are there any tips you could give me? I would really apprieciate it!

there arent many tips to give. poetry comes from the heart. if you dont feel it, you cant write it. just sit down, and try to clear your head. the things that stick in your head, are the things that need to be writen. my teacher once told me that a good author has a few things that s/he keeps coming back to. also, a poem should have a beat that you feel comfortable with. find your own beat, trust your instinct, and let it flow. and if you ever want advice on something you wrote, feel free to ask!

Never let anyone convince you that a poem absolutely has to rhyme or be a certain way, because that's not true. Certain styles have to, but not poetry in general.
Try different kinds of poetry. Write about anything you want.
