Rule Number Twelve
I let my black hair fall into my eyes just as the audible ‘ding’ of the door opening reached my ears. The scent of freshly fallen snowflakes and perfectly grinded coffee filled my nostrils and I had to bit the inside of my cheek to stop myself from doing something damn stupid. I didn’t look up. I didn’t have to. I already knew who had walked in; I could tell by the husky, liquid honey ‘Hello Gigi’ that it was Kaiden. Oh, my sweet, devilishly handsome Kaiden, my fellow coworker.
Can you see the problem now?
Rule Number Twelve. That pesky rule hung over my head like a heavy cloud, a burden that just wouldn’t go away.
You're probably wondering what Rule Number Twelve is. If you don't know, well then you've probably never watched NCIS.
Sad, I know. I follow the rules of some television show. Thing is, so does my boss. Yes, the boss of the coffee shop I work for follows the rules of a some fake character from a television show. I've seen a girl get fired for breaking one of the rules.
And if I were caught, I'd be fired for breaking the most important rule.
Number Twelve.
If Gibbs were real, he'd Gibb Slap me so far into the Infinity and beyond that even Buzz Light-year couldn’t get to me. I've watched enough NCIS episodes to know that Gibbs hated when people break protocol. I could almost hear his sharp voice in the back of my mind, chewing me out as I passed a caramel frappe with no whip to a middle aged man.
“Appleworth. You better have a damn good reason why you've broken Rule Number Twelve with Jacobs."
I'd gulp down my fear and stared up at the silver haired man with innocence.
"Good morning boss. Want some coffee? I got it just the way you like it. Black as Director Vance’s soul."
I'd flash a cheeky smile, sneak a quick glance over my shoulder to make sure Vance wasn’t behind me (I swear, all of them were ninjas, Ziva included), before turning back to the Boss Man. I’d smile innocently and act like I didn't have a clue what Gibbs was talking about while I offered him his one weakness; caffeine. Using his weakness against him would buy me brownie points. And time. Time was definitely what I needed.
Snatching the coffee out of my hand, he’d stare, his ice blue eyes would see right through my little ploy as he waited for me to explain myself. I felt like I was getting interrogated, which was funny, because I hadn’t committed any crime.
Well, except I broke Rule Number Twelve.
"Honestly, Boss, I don’t know what you’re talking about-"
Before I could even finish the sentence, I'd feel a sharp pain in the back of my head. Biting my lip to stop myself from crying out, I'd give Gibbs an incredulous look.
He'd just glare back.
You know damn well what I'm talking about, Appleworth. Don't make me force it out of you."
I'd gulp and think of something witty, something Dinozzo would give me a thumbs up for saying.
"Well, when you say it like that, Boss, force actually sounds kinda fun." That's when I’d grin and glance at Tony, who would howl with laughter before sombering up at Gibbs's annoyed look.
"Appleworth." He'd growl a warning and I'd try to keep my face neutral and calm. Gibbs could smell fear. I couldn't let my fear show or he'd eat me alive.
"Ohhhhh..." My fingers taps my chin as I quirk my brow at Gibbs. "You're talking about that Jacobs. The new guy."
Tony would give a smug look as he leaned back in his chair, his eyes shining as he watched Gibbs rip me a new one. Tim, sweet Timmy, would give me a sympathetic look from behind his computer screen as Ziva would shot me an apologetic, saddened smile.
I never did like having the attention on me for long. So I’d try to point the blame on Tony.
“Pft. I'm not suicidal enough to break your rule, Boss Man, UNLIKE someone I know,” I’d scoffed as my gaze would fall on Tony, who would curse and fidget under Gibb’s X-ray stare. It was like he was looking through you.
I shook myself out of my reverie and focused on coffee. Stir, pour, smile, simmer, chat, give, repeat. It was the same ol' routine. It didn't take a genius with an IQ of 200 to figure out how to pour coffee beans into the grinder and press a button.
“Jamaican Blend at the bar,” I yelled as I waved the steamy, warm cup in my hands. Jamaican Blend; the Boss man’s favorite flavor of coffee.
Oh the cruel irony.
"Hey, Gigi. Look at this!"
I froze, my green eyes wide in shock as Kaiden slid past me and grinned, his shimmery blue eyes full of amusement as he bumped his hip against mine before he floated over to the frap machine, three frozen drinks balanced in his hands.
"Is that a blush I see on those little cheeks of yours," he teased, his eyes flashing with delight.
I fought off the blush and looked at the marble counter, a small smile playing on my lips as Kaiden flashed me that charming smile of his.
As much as I hated to admit it, even though I could lose my job over Rule Number Twelve, I would do it all over again, even with my job at stake.
Because falling in love with my coworker was the best thing I ever did.
