TeenInk_Moderator posted this thread...

Hello TeenInk Users,

The book ofthe month is hereby reinstated! Please feel free to make suggestions for future books in the forum below. For now we will start with a book that is mainstream.

This month's book is:

The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan

(Book 1 of Percy Jackson and the Olympians)

It can be found here: http://www.amazon.com/Lightning-Thief-Percy-Jackson-Olympians/dp/0786838655

So start off with your general thoughts on the premise of the book. A little later this week I will post writing prompts and discussion topics. I will give everyone a few days to start off.

Thanks,

The TeenInk Moderator

I LOVE THAT BOOK!!!!

I read the whole series. Very well writen. The only thing I was mad about was that it was a mix of Star Wars and Harry Potter. For example, Percy has green eyes, black hair, a prophecy to fullful...sound familiar?

I've read most of the series and i really liked it. It's a mix of modern and ancient Greece. i don't like the fawn though it reminded me of Narnia.

I though the book was pretty good... there are better ones though, I think. The story is decent, but it seems to be written for elemetary students, and the plot was predictable.

I agree with Konya about the Harry Potter resemblance. The book begins with the main character about to go on a field trip, and being warned that if there is any more funny business going on he is going to be in big trouble. I'm sure that you can guess whether or not there is any "funny business" on the trip. Other than that, I liked it!

I really enjoyed the entire series. It's kind of sad that now the movie is coming out, people will be jumping on the bandwagon and judging the book by the movie (which, by the way, was totally different from the book). I see what you mean about the Harry Potter resemblance - I'm a huge HP fan - but I think a lot of that is due to the fact that fantasy is such an old genre, hardly anything you can write in it is truly "new." JKR herself was heavily influenced by many older sources, and although fantasy is probably my favorite genre, that means you have to accept borrowed material, which hopefully has interesting characters. This book did! And of course, I also love everything to do with Greek myths, so I find the idea of updated myths to be a great one.

Second best book in the universe. The first best is Harry Potter, obviously.

PERCY JACKSON RULES!!!

Ok, sorry for sounding obsessive.

It was really good.  The movie was good, too, but totally different from the book.

omg! I just finished this book called Enchanted Island by May Torres. My friends were reading it, the cover caught my attention. It's so good. I so totally love the characters. There's a little bit of everything. Love, friendship, adventure. It's about a place called Puerto Rico. Four teens travel there and strange things start happening. I don't want to say too much. But omg it was so good.

I love Percy Jackson! Sarah, I can't believe someone else read Enchanted Island. When I've been on other forums, nobody else has heard of it. It may just be popular in New York, that's where I'm from. But I just loved, loved, loved Juan. Team Juan all the way!
