Pebble Mine is very widely known around Alaska and around the rest of the United States as being a very ‘touchy’ subject. Most Alaskans are very pointed on this subject. Well, we are not going to dwell on them, because in this essay, I am going to give my personal opinion on Pebble Mine, the benefits, the dangers, and the aftermath.
Pebble Mine is a company backed by investors and run by a company called Northern Dynasty. Northern Dynasty has promised a lot of things that may seem virtually impossible! But most of them would have a good effect if carried out properly. I think, that just putting millions of dollars and thousands of jobs up on the market for Alaskans is perfect! But unfortunately, those jobs and that money will only last as long as the mine is open, which is about 20-30 years. I don’t think that we should have a sudden burst of everything and then get it taken away. I think it will be just like in the Bible, when Egypt had 7 years of plenty, and 7 years of famine. I think that after Pebble Mine has gone, we will have even more people to feed, and those jobs will be sorely needed. Thousands of Alaskans will be in need of jobs, and will have to go onto welfare, which is a whole other problem in itself. But for the present time, it would boost our economy enormously. Although money would seem like the biggest problem here, its not.
Dangers are plopping up all over the place for Northern Dynasty. If passed, Pebble Mine would be the largest copper mine in the world, but would be built on the largest salmon spawning grounds ever! Northern Dynasty is trying to work it out so that we can have both, but often there has to be some sacrifice for dilemmas like this. If built, it would pollute the waters around it, and kill off the salmon population. This would have a major effect on commercial fisherman as well as the environment, and us! The bears eat the fish; we eat the bear’s… see where I’m going with this? In Hungry, they had a mine similar to Pebble, and it caused a toxic waste flood that covered a village in toxic red waste. It killed all the people and animals. We do NOT want that to happen to Alaska. I think that all ways of polluting and destroying the land, animals, and plants around a problem are completely wrong. In the Bible, Genesis specifically, we find that God tells us to take care of the things he put on this earth. We are the caretakers of the land, appointed by God. Pebble Mine is not just a threat to animals, but a threat to humans as well! Pebble Mine would consume 2 MILLION TONS of water PER DAY, which is just ridiculous, and would create a giant lake of toxic waste! This is just absurd! Northern Dynasty wants to put a giant lake of toxic waste that would give off fumes for over 70 miles, and Alaskans are actually CONSIDERING it? It is beyond my wildest dreams how some people can totally miss all the horrible things Pebble will create! But, don’t worry; it doesn’t get crazy until the aftermath.
I’m calling it the ‘aftermath’ because it really is what it will be! Aftermath is defined as the time after a major event or natural disaster. It will be both. It will be a horrific major event, and will destroy al natural things in a 5-mile radius of it. Pebble Mine’s plans and petitions to the government have stated that when they are done mining, they will stay for another 30 years on that land; treating and caring for the mess they would leave behind. I have a question. What happens after that? The toxic waste lake won’t just fade into the background! How are they going to keep the toxic waste from seeping into the ground and poisoning our groundwater? What are they going to do with all the wasted land that they leave behind? You can’t re-grow any of the trees or grass that was there because all the nutrients will have sucked out of the ground, leaving none for the plants. All the wildlife will be gone, and the cabins and homes all over that area would lose their property value, and the people living there would lose their way of life. The rustic, Alaskan way of life would be gone in this area because Pebble says that they would build a small city on site for their crew and staff. A city for over 3,000 people is no small city! What would they do about all the commercial fisherman loosing their jobs? Northern Dynasty has come up with nothing as an answer to all of these questions, because there is none. In my opinion, there is no compromise. It’s too big of a trade.
As I wrap this up, I just want to leave you with this: Pebble Mine is a threat to humans, animals, and vegetation in Alaska, and they have no plans to do anything different. So I encourage you, to stop this madness that has polluted the minds of some people in Alaska. You can do something about it, so, why not?
