It Only Takes One

It only takes one. One drunk driver behind one wheel. It only takes one second for a collision to occur, and possibly even less than that to take the life of one human being.

If one person dies due to drunk driving than it’s too many. Driving under the influence isn’t an accident, or a mistake. It’s a preventable choice made by an individual. It’s a deliberate act, one that could cost the lives of multiple people.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, thirty deaths occur every day due to driving under the influence, amounting to a staggering statistic: one death happens every forty eight minutes. That number applies to the United States alone. It does not account for the hundreds of other countries that lose lives to intoxicated drivers.

We live in a society that unwittingly tosses off drunk driving as a minor issue. People are more tolerant towards inebriated driving than almost any other crime. It is considered an evil that must be put up with, because stopping it would be next to impossible. This mentality only enables potential drunk drivers to think of driving under the influence as not a big deal.

The penalties for intoxication behind the wheel are sadly lacking the toughness needed to deter would-be drunk drivers. If laws were more strict then driving under the influence wouldn’t be as large of a problem that it is today. The only reason an intoxicated individual would get behind the wheel is if they thought they could get away with it.

One person absolutely does not have the right to drunkenly get behind the wheel and begin to drive. One person should not feel justified in starting their car when they can barely see their keys.

What could have prevented the thirty deaths that occurred today due to drunk driving?

One phone call.
