One of the most enlightening articles I have read on Teen Ink is, "The Mistakes of my Father" written by Amber. Amber addresses the social issue of racism and its deep roots in her family that she attempts to take away from. As a Latina, I have had various encounters with racism firsthand by people who underestimate my abilities. Some people believe that because of my ethnicity, I am incapable of ranking in the top one percent of my class as I currently do. Similarly, Amber's family was tormented and looked down upon merely for their race. Although they face prejudice, Amber knows that, "a few individuals don't define an entire race." She learns through the mistakes of her father that skin color or other differences do not set us apart, but bind us closer as we search for admirable inner traits rather than a prejudiced first impression.
