Anyone who has listened to a song by Ke$ha, knows hows it goes: a catchy melody, a phrase that gets stuck in your head and lyrics you can’t forget. And no matter where you seem to go, the songs are all over the radio or playing on someone’s iPod. You can’t escape it.

In this article, Jonah Weiner writes about the popular songs Ke$ha and other similar artists make, that tend to get stuck in people’s heads. There is a method to this madness, as Weiner explains.

The article, “Make It $top”, was posted on Slate.com. Weiner writes about the effect that Ke$ha’s songs have on people, and the methods by which she does so. He has a negative view of Ke$ha and her music, saying it is obnoxious.

In his article,Weiner says, “But its not what Ke$ha does badly, it’s what she does well, that makes her distinct...” That’s completely true. Ke$ha’s distinct, gritty style, use of sketchy lyrics, and intense energy is what makes her music unique, and captivating to listen to. Not to mention, catchy.

Weiner also goes on to explain how other Pop artists use similar techniques to create popularity for their music as well. Some examples: Katy Perry’s “I Kissed a Girl,” Kelly Clarkson’s “Since U Been Gone,” and Taio Cruz’s “Dynamite.”

“...Spring loaded, building tension over fleet, throbbing verses... Tamping energy down only to explode again...” are the words Weiner uses to describe theses popular songs. Being this way is what makes people get addicted to the song, and want more. If a person were to listen to any of these songs, or other top hits, they would easily able to identify these adjectives with the song.
Weiner is right. The catchy tunes and lyrics that characterize Ke$ha’s songs, easily get stuck in ones head. After constantly listening, and hearing them everywhere, its starts to consume you, and not in a good way.

Whether a person thinks Ke$ha’s songs are catchy and fun to listen to or, annoying and boring, is entirely dependent on the person. While Ke$ha may not have the widest variety of fan bases, her main fans, are loyal.
