Bereft

At dawn with a cloudburst,
Daylight soon breaks open,
The sun's rays drawing her
Out of the fortress she feels.
A widow with silken locks
Emerges from locked gates.
In a simple gown of white,
She leaves her grief, crosses
The lane to a lush meadow.
Her eyes shine the same light
Of all generations of women
Enduring misfortunes. She
Scans sky for the why of death,
Wonders who controls when
Or where our loved ones leave.
Alone, she stands bereft, muses
Over the emptiness filling her,
Remembers with love the past.

I love "out of the fortress she feels." This poem is sorrowful, yet beautiful!
