Last Day of the Year This work has been published in the Teen Ink monthly print magazine.

By sundaysmile, Jackson, MS

Someone spoke of a New Year's kiss
I turned despite myself to see
The exchange of candy
And hear my classmates laugh
(Milton Hershey makes us all comedic geniuses.)

I laughed anyway, forcing small talk
“Oh, I thought y'all meant something else”
The girl with the almond eyes shakes her head and says
She got neither one, and she doesn't care
I laugh and roll my eyes
Confessing that I did
But thinking the candy would have been more real
I keep to myself
