White a pure white mist was all I could see. I knew should be scared mere

seconds ago my twin brother Samuel and Eli fought over a remote neither would win in

the end. Then the doorbell chimed singing an easy lullaby giving notice that someone is

at the door. There standing behind a banquet of white roses is my boyfriend. Each petal

cures around each other each one individual creating a spiral so beautiful no other could

copy it. My boyfriend unmasks his face and hand me the flowers I take the card from

the banquet and happy birthday Maya love Shane.

“Thank you Shane but”.

Here we go again the spiels about how celebrating your birthday is very

important.

“Really Maya I wasn’t going to forget your birthday you know that now quite

pouting and get over here.”

I smiled I knew of course he wouldn’t but still I just wish it could be the two of

us it would make me so much happier if it was just him and me.

“’So are you read?”

“Ready for what”?

I didn’t get time to answer the world had come to a standstill everything froze

1

then the world went completely dark. It felt as if I was being transported to another

place. My mind slowly adjusted to what it was seeing or more importantly not seeing. It

was as if gravity had lifted and I flowed on a cloud of pure white. Where am I? How did I

get here? Will I be leaving and more importantly when? My body starts to get heavy my

eye lids start to fall but I resisted it. Sleep won out it felt as if I were drifting through

space floating trying to find that place to rest my head. Once I find my peaceful place I

rest my head. Sleep doesn’t stick with me long I slowly drift awake.

Nothing was making senses where was I know body lay everywhere unconscious

to the fact that the world has come to the end as we know it. My mind still in a fog, I

shack It to clear the disorientates of it all. My eyes roam over everything landing on

what left of my house. I felt empty inside the twin, Shane all gone. Shock of the moment

yet to kick in. I look at the faces of the children crying for mothers and father who will

never come and teen who just don’t know what do to with themselves. I think I’m

seeing thing no it really him I run to him dodging little children as I go.

“Shane “I cry out.

He turns around grab hold of me for dear life.

“Maya” you’re ok he searchers my faces and looks into my eye.

Grabbing my face searching, checking making sure I’m not hurt.

“Have you seen the twin?”

“No but I’m still looking.”

“You go this way all check that way.”

I check the chord searching every face twice before my eye land on two freckle

2

faced boy with golden brown hair huddling together. I rush to them Samuel see me first

he tugs on Eli’s shirt letting him know what happening.

“Maya” The twins say in union.

They lung into my arms I hold them for dear life not knowing what will be the

scariest part. I look around there are no adult children and teens the adult have all been

taken.

Two years into the future the adults are still in hiding or so that what we tell the

younger children. We still live in the past physically anyway. We have not aged a day

since the disappearances. We have mentally grown smarter. We have made our own

governments, two presidents, schools, and housings four people to each. We survive

but that not that the point something was ripped from our grapes we don’t know if we’ll

ever get it back.

“Samuel, Eli time to get up for school”. Maya

“Ugh” Samuel complains

“Eli let go you can’t be late again”.

Week go by slowly, time feels longer like it has stretched out. Time feels slower

and slower. A white mist has cloud our sky from dawn to dusk. Never leaving never

moving on. As week go by the mist drop slowly down to ground level. It eventually

surrounds us. Within the week we breathe in the mist. Body start to go into deep sleeps.

My body give in to sleep it has beg for. I’m falling the mist surround me. Once again my

body gets heavy my eye lids drop. I float through time and space looking for my

peaceful place. Time is frozen I stare at a banquet of roses so individual. The white mist

3

recedes back into ground. Time unfreezes my hearts skip a beat, I take a beat, I take a

deep breath and look around it was all a dream or was it?

The parent are back it like nothing ever change we’ll always have the knowledge

of what possible could be.

“So are you ready” Shane points his head to the cake with candle ready to be

wished upon

“Yes I am.” Maya indicates

I blow out my candles wishing; wait if you knew it wouldn’t come true.

We enjoyed the cake I knew what was on most of our mind the mist. Why return

us now? Why even take us in the first place? So many question, none answered. Will we

ever get the answers we need? What will it take to get these answers and who will be

willing to give everything up for these? For now we will enjoy what was returned to us

and pounder these questions later. We will enjoy the fact that our parent are back they

know nothing of what has happened we will keep it that way. The past is the past so

let’s leave it behind us and move forward onto a new and better tomorrow.
