Even though a clock doesn't work, people still look at it for time.

As she sat there, with that look in her eye, I enjoyed my sandwich. I looked at the tables around me and no one seemed to notice her. She stood up slowly and seductively. She stood a whole five feet and eight inches, with brown hair down to the middle of her back. Skin fairly tan and her body was full with curves. She looked at the clock behind the counter then looked at her watch as if she was late for something. She rushed out the door, never to be seen by me again that day.
I woke up the morning thinking I would see the girl from a few days ago. Once again she wasn’t there. I sit in the same spot every time I come to this café. It’s small but very spacious inside. The booth seats are brown with red tables, like checker board, and the floors were tiled. There was a counter going around the cashier’s spot to the restrooms, it was about a good twenty feet long. It almost looked like an old school diner. It was a simple café, at least that’s what I think.
I saw her pull up in a car on the passenger side. She stepped out of the car with red shoes, black and gold ankle bracelet, a red dress down to her knees and her hair looked like silk. It was curled and it flowed so well. Her hair shined with the sun’s reflection. She walked to the door as if she was modeling the dress she was wearing. I looked back down to my work and seemed to have lost my train of thought. When I glance back up and I saw another person getting out of the same car. This time it was a guy. He was wearing dress shoes that were black, suit pants without the jacket, and a red dress shirt. I thought they wear together.
He walked over to the girl and said, “Really? Really Janelle? You couldn’t wait for me?”
She replied with a simple, “Please, you were taking too long talking to your boyfriend.”
I seemed to be staring at them and she looked at me. She looked at me from her usual table and gave me a smile; so I took two fingers and threw them from my forehead as a simple wave to her. Then I went back to my work, which wasn’t anything, I was “reading” a newspaper.
The nicely dressed guy that was with Janell. He was dressed also and came over to me and sat down, I looked at him sideways and kept reading. “Hi. I’m Justin. How are you doing?” he said with a smile.
I replied, “Sup I’m Daniel. I’m doing very good right now, you?”
“I’m good. Were you staring at my friend over there?”
I was in the middle of drinking my coffee and started coughing when he asked me that. “I was simply looking to-to-to-to… well yes I was looking at her. Why are you two dressed up?”
He said, “Go ask my friend why.” he put a smile on his face and got up and went to the restroom.
I got up the courage to walk over to her and sit down, and then I stood back up. I asked her, “May I sit here?”
“Yeah, feel free.”
“Sup my name is Daniel. I was wondering why you and your friend were dressed up so nicely?” as if that was all I was thinking. In my head I was thinking why did I say “sup” like I’m from the hood or something?
“Hi, I’m Janelle. We are going to a party for my friend’s boyfriend. I can bring a friend, do you want to come?”
I thought for a second and looked at what I was wearing. I was wearing a dress shirt, that wasn’t inside my black jeans. I had on some fly Nike shoes that were black and gold, like Janelle’s ankle bracelet. “I would love to come. But I’m not as fancy as you guys.”
Justin makes his way back to the table. She looked at him a laughed. “He isn’t that dressed up. Is that okay?” she said.
“That’s fine with me, I just hope Will won’t mind but he’s cute enough.”
I looked so confused. They were talking as if I wasn’t there. “Thank you, I guess” I said regretting as it was coming out of my mouth.
Janelle got up threw some cash on the table and waved let’s go. I walked to my table and paid for my things and left a small tip. Then we all made our way to Justin’s car.
One our way to the party, I think that’s what Janelle said, it was silent for about three blocks.
“How about we turn on some music to kill some of the tension in here, what do you like to listen to Daniel?” she said halfway turned around.
“It doesn’t matter really. Anything will do.”
She put on the radio and tuned it for a second then found a good station. We listened to that station the whole way there. The ride took about thirty minutes and my butt was numb from the car ride.
We pulled up to the club and there was nowhere to park.
“Where are we going to park?” I said with curiosity.
“There’s private parking in the back. We’ll just park back there and use the rear entrance” said Justin.
We walked in the party, everybody was jumping around and dancing to the music. There was a DJ playing music and taking requests. Lights were flashing and out the corner of my eyes I saw a photographer, or at least someone who had a camera. I didn’t actually see the guy taking pictures. There was a bar on the second floor and the dance floor was on the first floor. We made our way over to Justin’s boyfriend.
His boyfriend was tall and had brown long hair. He wasn’t dressed up like Janelle and Justin. He looked like me, really not caring who would see him. It was silent for a second; Justin started to say something then stopped.
“Hi I am Daniel. How are you doing?” I said with a smile.
“Who is this and how did he get here? I’m not finna have some guy I don't know at my own birthday party!” said Justin’s boyfriend.
I stood there stunned and my face was frozen.
“I’m just playing with you Daniel. I know who you are, Justin called me while he was in the bathroom, which I hate” Justin’s boyfriend said with a laugh.
I was still stunned, wondering why anyone would say that to a person that they’ve just met. That’s beside the point; I was ready to party, even though I wasn’t dressed up with everyone else. Then I looked around and there were people that were just wearing jeans and a t-shirt. Most of the party was filled with guys dancing freely. When I say freely that’s exactly what I mean. Their arms were loose in the air and they had glow sticks in their hands and mouths.
I walk up to the second floor to the bar and sat down. There was a mirror behind the bar so if someone walked up to me I could look at them through that instead of turn to that person. The bartender was busy at the time so I waited. A few minutes later he came up to me and started talking to me.
I told him, “Can I get um…”
“How about we start you off with a menu,” he smile then gave me a small plastic menu.
The menu was pink and blue with white writing. The menu was filled with colorful drinks. I closed my eyes and pointed to one, I really didn’t care which one I was going to have.
“I will have a two shots of Vodka,” my face turned away as I finished my request.
“That is our most popular drink today. I’ll have that for you in just a sec.”
I spun my stool around to see what was going on, the same thing as earlier. I felt out of place here. Then out the corner of my eye I saw Janelle walking up to me. I gave her a stare until she was next to me. Her walk was so amazing; her curves made her look like she was walking on a catwalk. She was next to me now and I looked at her up and down. She took her hand and placed it on my shoulder and pull me in close to her.
She whispered in my ear, “Are you bored?”
“No, what makes you think im bored? I am doing just fine here” I flashed a fake smile to her.
“Well then I guess I was wrong.” She wasn’t, I just didn’t want to tell her that she was right about me. I turned around and looked at the bartender; he looked like he was almost done making my drink.
“Did you order something?” Janelle asked. I just nodded my head.
“Here are your drinks, sir. Enjoy” the bartender said while sitting down my drinks.
I threw the shots back. “I have to use the bathroom. Where is it?” I looked around while talking to Janelle. She pointed to the corner of the club.
I finally made my way into the bathroom. It was very clean for a public bathroom. I splashed some water on my face then grabbed a towel.
“Don't move or I will shoot you,” a voice appear from the stall. “I want you to walk out of this club and get into a car. If you make one sound, I don't mind killing everyone in this club.”
“What are you talking about? I don't have anything...”
“SHUT UP!! I told you not to speak,” the man with the gun stated.
“Uuummm if you don't mind me saying. You never told me not to speak. You said don't move,” I corrected him. His face seemed to have the lines on his forehead that gave away his frustration.
“I am going to walk you out of this club now. I don't want you to speak whatsoever,” the man with the gun said.
“I will speak whenever I want to,” I asserted. I was trying my best to make him lose his temper.
“I TOLD YOU DON'T SPEAK,” he started to wave the gun around. That is when I punched him in the nose and ran for the door.
I tried my best to find Janelle but she wasn't at the bar anymore. I searched for the front door and made a break for it. I realized I didn't bring my car to the club. I searched my pockets for my phone and remember that I placed it on the counter in the bathroom. At that moment my luck just so happened to run out.
Moments later, “Get in,” a car came to a screaming stop in front of me. I jump in the car and saw that it was Janelle.
“Man, I am happy to see you,” I sighed in relief. Then I thought to myself what if this is a set up? What if she is a part of all this madness? She couldn't be, right?
“Do as I say, when I say it. Don't ask any questions and whatever you do. Do not say no,” she said as she turned to look at me.
“NO, I want to know what the heck is going on,” I demanded.
She pressed on the gas even harder than before. Her face was too calm for this to be her first time doing this. Her face was just so relaxed compared to mines.
“What are we running from?” I questioned.
She looked me straight in the eyes, “I told you not to ask questions and just do as you are told.” She grabbed the handbrake and pulled while still looking me in the eyes. The car drifted around the corner with ease. That is when I seen a car behind us doing the same.
BANG!!! BANG!! BANG!!! Three shots in a row. Then the back window shattered and glass flew from the back. Some pieces hit me in the back of the neck.
“CRAP! Are you freaking kidding me?” I shouted as I put my head in between my knees. Then I felt my body jerk toward the driver’s side of the car. I heard glass break and a loud “thump” noise. Then everything faded to black.
I woke up in an ambulance. Looking at a man squeeze oxygen in my mouth. “Hey I think he is waking up. Sir? Sir? Can you hear me? Blink if you can hear me,” he shouted to me.
I felt the ambulance hit a bump. I groaned a little because of the pain. The ambulance came to a sudden stop. Then some people pulled me out of the ambulance. Everything was still a little blurry so I really couldn't tell where I was. Within the next few moments, I saw rectangular lights. One after another, constantly. It felt like forever, just laying there not being able to move.
Hours later I finally woke up. I was fully aware of where I was. I seen what looked like a hospital room. But for some odd reason it didn't feel as if I was in a hospital. A nurse knocked on the door softly.
She spoke as if she was afraid, “Sir, how are you doing today?”
I couldn't answer the question. Something was wrong with my throat. Or maybe it was just my voice. I reached for my throat and felt something foreign.
“Shhh!” the nurse said. She leaned in closer, “Don't speak. Some people will being coming in this room in a few minutes. I need you to concentrate.”

I nodded in agreement.
“Get dressed as soon as I walk out. Leave this room and go to the right. Hide in one of the bathrooms for two minutes. After the two minutes are up. Make a run for the exit. I car will be at the north entrance. Godspeed and good luck,” the nurse said. Then left the room quickly.
I searched the room for my clothes. I threw them on and started reaching for the door. I heard a few voices outside the door but I couldn't make out what they were saying. Suddenly the door opened. I hid behind the door until the doctor entered. As he was looking at the clipboard. I left the room and went to the right as instructed. I looked for the bathroom but could not find it. Then I seen a door so I opened it and it was a storage closet. I counted sixty seconds, which took forever. I counted another sixty seconds. Then I stumbled out of the closet. I ran for the door as fast I could run. Then I started to look around and I realized. This wasn't a hospital. It was nursing home. I got outside and I searched and searched. Then I heard honking.
“SOMEONE STOP HIM,” a voice yelled from inside the nursing home.
I jumped in the car and looked at the driver. It was Janelle again. “This can not be possible. Where did you go when we got into that accident?” I questioned her.
She looked at me and was silent for a few second then said, “We have been searching for you for a couple of weeks now. You weren't that hard to find. There are people out there that want you dead.”
“Wait, stop,” I interrupted, “Why do they want me dead? I haven't done anything wrong.”
She replied, “ You haven't done anything YET. You will have to do something that is very important. It might kill and others if you fail. You can accept this task or you can call it all off? It is up to you.”
The car got really silent for a minute. I just sat there thinking to myself. I really don't know what to do. I don't want to die. I wonder what is it that I have to do? Should I say yes or no?
