Well my life as a serf is not really interesting if you ask me, I only work it because I need money for my family. Right now I’m the only one who has a job and that is because my mom and dad have to take care of my sisters and brothers. I just had my birthday, so now I am 18 and I also found out that there is something called the Black Death going around and it just reached Moscow. My mom and dad both said, “That we have to stay inside.”

The next day I snuck out to go to work and now I never thought that I would say that ever in my life. I started walking and then I saw it, my parents were right I should have never gone to work today. There were bodies and bodies and I ran as fast as I could back home. Once I got home I snuck through my bedroom window and walked into the living room. “KATHERINA where were you,” said my father?
“I was in my room,” I said. quickly because my parents always know when I’m lying.
“No you were not, your mother went looking for you out there,” my father said.
“What”, I yelled?
“There are really sick people out there,” father I said.

My mom came back around half an hour after I did. When she came in she gave me a big hug and she wasn’t mad but she told me that I should know better.  The next few days my mom started off with a lot of coughing and sleeping a lot. My father was very worried and he wanted to keep all of us away from her except him and the doctor. The days after that she was worse, she had a bad fever, headache, and she was very weak.  The doctor told us that she had the bubonic plague and she had about three days to live. Those last few days were the hardest because we really could do anything with her because we didn’t want to get sick.

The day December 23 came so fast and we knew that she was going to go but we all didn’t want her to. It was the hardest for me because I was the oldest and I was the closet with her.  She died a very horrible death... and I will always miss her-!!!
