A Normal Day in Tech

It was a typical school day, starting out with a icy cold morning and freezing winds. I had my usually warm shower to stop myself from becoming a living popsicle. I walked downstairs and begun my journey to the land of education. But after entering the mobile machine that would take me to my destination, I realized that it wasn’t going to be a normal day. Today was a special day, one that I had been preparing for an entire 120 hours. That could have been either the beginning or ending of my career as tech crew member at my highschool. I had arrived at the front doors at the beginning of the day like any other one, found the number labeled on the door for my first class. Before I knew it the bell had already sounded and it was time to get moving in the day. For all I knew, today would have ended in either in claiming a path to a new hobby or having my plans burn up in flames. I knew though, that no matter what I did it couldn’t be that good since I was just a freshman. Just a brand new person to a whole new, except this world be high school. The thoughts keep coming and going in and out of my mind faster than I could process them. It was one of those times in your life when you overthink everything, when it really isn’t that big a deal. But for you it could mean everything.

It was already almost the end of the school and I hadn’t figured out what I wanted to do to pass the time in between the end of school and the call time for the show. I had the option of stepping into the darkness of the unknown and staying after school with the rest of the “crew” or taking the candy coated road home from inside my car to my nice, warm home. But once again, I told myself that it would be fine and I took that step off the plank into the sea of darkness. At first all I could see were empty seats, closed doors and for all I knew I was late, early or not even in the same area code. But one by one, two by two they started pouring in and gathering in some room known as the “tech room”. Then there was also the name of the booth that would get thrown out every few minutes. My group which I had decided to join was labeled as “lights & sounds” which would be responsible for setting up anything lighting or sound related for all shows/events shown in the theatre. At my old middle school, I was the only “lights or sound” person that would ever work the silly little performances we had in our small black box theatre.  The most” high tech” setup involved a Macbook Air hooked up to a 12 foot long audio cable, snaking it’s way around the “theatre” and into the wall port. Then we would have a light board, which no one really knew how to work other than our director of drama who rarely worked tech while I was around.

With all of this juggling around in my head, I decided to plunge even deeper into the darkness that I had already stepped into. After panicking for a while since I couldn’t find my way to the supposed tech room, which I was told was right “up there”. I went around trying to find someone who looked like they had the knowledge how to correctly explain what “up there” meant. I managed to find someone who was able to correctly explain how to find the tech room and you have to go through a dark hallway on the second floor in the middle of the hall (which at the time made no sense at all). I took my bag and plunged deeper into the rabbit hole, found my way into the tech room and was greeted by a girl with blonde hair. She said: “Hi.” From there on out, I would find myself responding to schoology posts asking if someone could work “the show” before I even knew I was available. There goes the rest of my next three years...
