Ekphrastic Poem

It is afternoon but my thoughts
Make it feel it is late at night
The gentle rain glistens on the sidewalks
Sidewalks that would look colorful
To anyone else

I cling to my younger sister
Knowing she is painfully sad
She doesn’t notice the odd way
The street lamps make the tall trees glow
In a rainbow

In the distance we can just see
If we squint our eyes through the fog
The quaint small town where we grew up
The rows of houses with square windows
Only half lit

We walk with her arm looped through mine
Sharing an umbrella and pain
We walk…no trudge, through the light rain
On the slick path to see granddad
His future vague

The humidity as heavy
As our hearts and as our scared thoughts
Thoughts racing through our tired minds
We pray, “Please let him pull through
So this path glows (again)"

This was a tenth grade writing assignement. It is based on artwork that showed a man and a woman walking on a wet and lit up path to a large house. The painting was colorful but still gloomy. The image I chose here is not the exact image I used to write the poem.
