Winston Churchill may have done many great things in the world, but this great leader did so poorly in school that he failed getting into military school two times! Although Winston went through this this, he would keep pressing forward, even winning awards for his literature. Winning awards and allying with the United States, he would help bring the United Kingdom from the hands of defeat to victory and defeat the axis powers. Winston Churchill became a great world leader and accomplished many things.

Winston had a hard early life.  He was “born to an aristocratic family on November 30th 1874 in Blenheim Palace Oxfordshire” (“Winston Churchill Biography”).  As a young boy, being educated in school was not the best for Winston.  Falling behind in his grades, Winston did poorly in his school.  In fact, Winston had a speech impediment or a lisp that made him pronounce his “s” like “sh” and dyslexia (Watt).  When Winston was fourteen one of his professors reported to his father, “His forgetfulness, carelessness, unpunctuality, and irregularity in every way, have really been so serious … he ought to be at the top of his form, whereas he is at the bottom” (Watt).
Because winston did so poorly in school, he didn’t even bother signing up for his home town school. He did however, have a “fascination with militarism” (Sir Winston Churchill) and joined the Royal Cavalry in 1895. Even though he failed getting in two times, he did very well and “graduated 20th in his class of 130” (Winston Churchill Biography). Soon, this  leader would put his interests somewhere else.

Eventually he turned over to politics. “He became a member of Parliament in 1900 for the conservative party.  Churchill switched to the Liberal Party in 1904.” (Prime MInister) He was elected a member of parliament in 1908, and he was assigned to the Prime Minister’s cabinet as president of the Board of Trade.  Presenting ideas that would better benefit the community or world was what Winston would do. He was elected Prime Minister in 1940. He presented the “Education Act of 1944 which raised the school leavers age to 14 years old” (Sir Winston Churchill). Soon World War II would begin and Churchill would take action.

He was involved with war and did many things to help defeat it.  Before the war, Churchill served as a minister of war and air and colonial secretary under Prime Minister David Lloyd George. When World War II broke out in 1939 Winston was appointed the first Lord of the Admiralty and a member of the war cabinet. “In april 1940 he became chairman of the Military Coordinating Committee” (Prime Minister).  That same summer he was elected Prime Minister.  By March 1941, Churchill was allied with the United States he was able to get plenty of resources through the Lend Lease Act which allowed Britain to order war goods from the United States. During this time, Winston presented his famous, “Iron Curtain” speech that greatly affected the audience. He was congratulated for presenting the speech and in 1953 he won the Nobel Prize in Literature for this speech and his memoirs of leading the Allies in World War II.        
Ladies and gentlemen, the United States stands at this time at the pinnacle of world power. It is a solemn moment for the American Democracy. For with primacy in power is also joined an awe-inspiring accountability to the future. If you look around you, you must feel not only the sense of duty done but also you must feel anxiety lest you fall below the level of achievement. Although Churchill went through some tough times in his life, he would overcome his hardships. He was a magnificent world leader and became many great things. In 1945, World War II was over, and  Churchill was well known for giving the United Kingdom victory he was elected the Prime minister again in October 1951. Later in 1953, he was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II. He won the Nobel Prize in Literature that same year.  As Prime Minister, he helped millions of lives and brought the United Kingdom from the hands of defeat in WW2 to victory.
