When I was in elementary school, I didn't really have any friends. I was one of those girls who read during recess while everybody else played with their friends. Every year, I would have a different person be my "best" friend. In fifth grade, I was best friends with a girl and I was convinced that she liked me. I don't want to use her name, so I'll pretend her name was Caroline.
One day, we had a fight. Now, I don't even remember what it was about, but I do remember that it seemed important at the time. A few days later, after giving each other the silent treatment, I started to feel bad. I wrote her a long, apologetic note and put it on her desk. She picked it up and read it. The next thing I knew, she had ripped it up, spit on it, and threw my note down the toilet. I was so sad for the next month, I cried, and went to talk to the counselor about it. About two weeks later, she came and apologized, and we were "best" friends again.
In March, my school went on a field trip to Williamsburg, Virginia. Caroline and another girl were in my room, and I thought it was going to be fun. It turns out, they made me sleep on the cot for multiple nights instead of the nice comfy bed. Then, every night they would interrogate me to try to find out who I had a crush on. Let's say the boy's name was Bill. Bill and I had been friends for years. When I finally told them that I had a crush on him, Caroline accused me of copying her. She was furious at me and wanted to get revenge. So, she threw temper tantrums whenever she saw me within five yards of Bill. When that didn't work, she decided to tell everyone in the grade. So, she went to work. For the rest of the school year, I had people make fun of me and torment me because of her.
I guess Caroline never got over her jealousy. Late in my fifth grade year, someone began to write fake love notes to a guy who I will call Bob. On every note, the anonymous author signed my name on it. Every one said,"Love, Catherine," even though I had nothing to do with the notes! I was furious, and so were the teachers. They would not let us have recess until someone confessed. We never actually found out who wrote them. But, considering our relationship that school year, I always suspected that it was Caroline.
After these incidents, I knew that relationship could not be fixed. I was so depressed. We didn't talk or even look at each other for about a year. Just recently, she began to talk to me, little by little, to be nice. I know that our relationship now will never be as strong as our past relationship, but it's nice to have her talking to me.
Now, I have three very close friends. My best friend, Ellie, and I are almost like twins. I know every detail about her and we never run out of things to talk about. We do everything together, and we enjoy all of the same things. Sometimes people have actually thought that we were twins. My other two friends, Reagan and Anna, are both similar to me. All four of us are always together, as if joined by the hip. I know that I will never have to worry about them being so mean to me and having our relationship "go bad".
