WHY SCIENCE IS MAKING LIFE BORING...
I’m sorry to say it, but scrolling through this category makes me a little ashamed of being a teenager.
By the looks of things, most of us are intent on gabbling on about the news that (shock-horror) smoking, drinking and drugs can shorten your life-span. As if we haven’t been told enough already. Now, I’m not advocating a life that revolves around the next fix, cig, or flagon - but let’s at least enjoy ourselves. Without these three deadly sins, where would we be?
Where would art, music and our beloved literature be without drugs? How could the artist, musician or novelist survive without the odd hasty cigarette clenched between their troubled lips? Where would the weekends of stumbling, spewing and stupidity be without the litres of white cider and mysterious mixed spirits?
If we are all as clever as we would like to think, why is it that we still torture our bodies with these fatal excesses?
The answer is fun - doing stuff for the pure hell of it - it’s supposed to be what we (teenagers) live for. Now is the time to feast on rebellion, however petty, and believe ourselves to be invincible. So why waste it preaching to the unconvertible, when there’s plenty of sensible heads on aging shoulders to do that for us?
Let’s stop patronising each other, and just enjoy surviving. After all, good health is merely the slowest rate at which we can die!

i agree with you....and not because i think that every teenager in the universe should jump up to do these things. but the reality of that matter IS that most of us (i knw not everyone) have done, will do, and will continue doing these things. we're constantly reminded of how bad they are and what they can do to our minds and bodies. but i agree with you that not going over the top and enjoying your teenage life AS YOU CHOOSE (if these substances are of your interest) that it's not the worst thing in the world. we choose our decisions, whether they are intelligent, or completely dumb..at least we know that WE made the choice and decided to do them. i believe in accepting whatever it is people choose. it's their life....let them live it, instead of repremanding and lecturing on the "dangerously stupid" mistakes they may commit..just my oppinion.
I love how you worded this btw:) and i like your message. you told what YOU believed, but didn't force the reader to think that you have to go out and do this because it's "wat us teenagers should be doing with our lives." we should do what we want to do. after all, it IS our lives..right?
I never said ALL artists and authors use drugs, just some great ones did.
I had no idea drugs could kill you! You’ve really opened my eyes! Doesn’t disprove the fact that, when used in moderation, they are still enjoyable.
Again, just saying we shouldn’t preach to each other, instead just enjoy ourselves. Yes, I do believe we should have fun - though admittedly dying young isn’t high on my list of priorities.
Assuming the public is ignorant is a very dangerous thing to do; I like to let people make their own choices, providing them with facts instead of sensationalist propaganda.
Thanks for commenting!
You're happy with your lifestyle, I'm happy with mine, I'm not attempting to chang anyones'!
My point has always been (believe me I've tried to make it as clear as possible) that we should try to refrain from preaching (as you have just done) to eachother, instead possibly just enjoying ourselves.
I'm not an imbecile, I'm fully aware of the damage drugs and alcohol can sustain - but when used in moderation they can be very enjoyable!
Personally, I think your reliance on God (especially in your argument) is a bit pitiful. Reason will HOPEFULLY one day reveal to you the futility of your faith.
Thanks for commenting!
I am so with you!
I totally agree.
Nice comment, blondiedeam. Really profound. It definitely added a lot to the discussion.
I agree with you, isabel. Completely.
Yeah sure, but if you have bad health you're gonna die a lot faster, so you might as well put it off. Um, I'm an artist and author, and I do just fine without being under the influence of ANY illegal substance.
"Let's not forget the unforgettable and inspirational moments they can provide"? Really? You really said that? What's unforgettable to me is learning about a 22-year-old young man who overdosed on GDP and went into a coma for 2 weeks, and now has to relearn how to walk, talk, and think. What's unforgettable to me is learning about a 13-year-old girl who tried heroin for the very first time - and DIED. A 13-year-old life, ended. So much to live for.
"There's plenty of sensible heads on aging shoulders to do that for us". Really. So you're saying we should all be stupid and do reckless, idiotic things, but don't worry, adults will help us figure it out. News flash? Adults can't fix everything. And if we're ever gonna BE adults, we might wanna start thinking for ourselves.
And why do "we" keep torturing ourselves with these "fatal excesses"? Because a lot of people, like you, believe that we should have fun now and die young. Generally, the public is either not well informed about this stuff or just doesn't care. Well, let me tell you, that's NOT a good thing. Too bad for them. I, on the other hand, will stay healthy, because personally, I'd like to "enjoy surviving" a little longer.
(Sarcastically) So.... ruin your life,, I mean whats the worst that could happen, you will die a lot sooner than I will maybe! But go ahead I mean, whats the fun of being healthy and not dieng while you drink and drive? No... it is much more fun to die when your only twenty something because you ruined your lungs from smoking...
Yeah! That sounds like a fun way to live, go take some drugs and then you go have a nice hallucination, think you can fly and then jump off a building and die! Sounds like a fun life!
Great advice! Love the advice you are giving to your fellow teens. Lets all be drunks!
HaHa! I am thinking I'll ignore your advice and live a nice long healthy happy life!
