Homophobes perturb me. Well, no, let me rephrase that. It's not that they themselves irk me, it's that I abhor the way they treat people. I mean, I'm not the nicest person in the world. I can get pretty mad sometimes, but I've had my fair share of bullying. Fortunately, I haven't been the one bullied about not being heterosexual, but some of my close friends have been. They would be falsely accused of being gay or lesbian, and other people would overhear. They would spread it like wildfire. People would torment and tease my friends, and although I tried to help them by saying it was just a rumor, it wouldn't help. It is really hard to see them go through some of the things they do.
Why do people think that homosexuals can control their sexuality? I believe that almost all are born that way, and only a small portion choose to be. It's something that they cannot help, so why hate them? They already go through so many hardships. That is so sad and so wrong. I'm sure many suicides by gays or lesbians are caused by being tormented by heterosexual homophobes.
Can you imagine people making fun of you all the time and sometimes even physically hurting you? It has become almost like the way whites used to treat African Americans in the 1960s. Judging someone by their sexuality or color of their skin is just not right. In the 1970s, homosexuality was considered a mental illness. That is just offensive and vile. That's like saying, "Oh John, you're in love with Jimmy, you need to be put in a mental asylum." Can you imagine saying that to somebody?
Also, it disgusts me when people bring in the fact that it says in the Bible not to be gay or lesbian as their logic for being a homophobe. Yes, it states that "you should not lie with a male as one lies with a female" in Leviticus, but most people leave out the fact that it also says "'Do not mate different kinds of animals...Do not plant your field with two kinds of seed...Do not wear clothing woven of two kinds of material." Do we listen to those decrees? My shirt is 60% cotton and 40% polyester, but people don't make fun of me for that. We mix lions and tigers(ligers) and horses and donkeys(mules, but no one finds that wrong. We plant corn and potatoes together, and no one condemns us. In Jeremiah it says "...although you enlarge your eyes with paint, In vain you make yourself beautiful..." We all still "paint our faces" with makeup and it is considered normal! What is different about homosexuals?
People shouldn't think that homosexuals are bad people, or aren't really human, because they are just like us. I know a good number of homosexuals, and they are some of the nicest, kindest, most accepting people I know. Just knowing what they go through with people judging them all the time makes me upset because no one deserves that sort of treatment. It's hard for me to even imagine talking to anybody the way that some people talk to gay people. I know one boy who calls his peers "gay" if he feels like it or says "that's so gay". What if the person he was talking to was actually homosexual or a gay person overheard him? That would be very offensive. I can hardly conceptualize some of the harrowing situations that some homophiles go through.
As you can see, one of my major pet peeves is when people act impudent and dissolute to homosexuals. I feel that it is very wrong, and that people shouldn't treat anyone that terribly.
