I am an enthusiastic devotee of opinion columns: movies, music, current events, etcetera. I like to understand how people feel about important topics because it exposes me to viewpoints I may not have considered. I think this supplies me with more respect for others then before. However, I am at a loss when someone presents a long-winded rant about strangers. My confusion specifically relates to the intense dislike of celebrities and the lifestyle choices of others.
Many feelings about “girly-girls” or “scene kids” or “rich people” or “religious fanatics” seem to be generalizations. Is it not exhausting to worry about the preferences of multitudes you have never met? Personally, I do not care how much money anyone else spends, what clothes they buy, the religions they practice, or if they choose not to practice any religion at all. I do not think smokers are sinners. I do not think anyone is a sinner, plain and simple, because it is not my call. We can all decide to be who we want, and we should all respect that there are different strokes for different folks. If someone does not share your beliefs, there are still 7.027 billion other people out there. Odds are, someone will take your side. Really, why would anyone bother to judge?
