New Cartoons Don't Suck!

By , Manila, Philippines
There are so many people on websites I visit regularly – Facebook, Youtube, and 9gag, that complain about today’s cartoons. I would like to mention that the majority of these people are ‘90’s kids’ and are currently in college or university.

Why these people have so much interest in other kids’ lives, I don’t know, but I am a 90’s kid. If you asked most college kids, however, if I really I am a 90’s kid, they would say no, she’s born too late in the 90’s. Well, I don’t understand. How am I not a 90’s kid if I was born in the 90’s?

My point is that the #1 thing they complain about the most is the cartoons that show on Cartoon Network. Cartoon Network’s channel came out in October, 1992 and featured only cartoons. The cartoons that appear to be everyone’s favourites from this time period are shows such as Ed, Edd n’ Eddy, Courage the Cowardly Dog, Pokemon, Johnny Bravo, Dexter’s Laboratory, Powerpuff Girls, so on and so forth. These shows are a little bit before my time, I’m 15 years old, but the country that I was living in was underdeveloped and old, retro Cartoon Network shows were the only thing on for kids, hence why I was forced to watch them if I was bored. Please note this was at a time when Youtube was new as well.

Shows that premiere now, not just on Cartoon Network, but that appear to be popular are Fanboy & Chum Chum, Adventure Time, Regular Show, Ben 10, Planet Sheen, and other shows of the sort. Many of these college students are complaining that these shows don’t live up to their standards, and I have a few things to say about that.

First of all, I don’t completely disagree with them. Planet Sheen definitely is not as charming as Jimmy Neutron was, even though the CGI graphics have improved. However, is it really necessary to go as far as to say that these shows are horrible?

Take a moment to think about when you were really little. What shows did you watch the most? What’s your reaction when you stop watching the show for a few years, and then watch it again? You probably get a sense of nostalgia from a time when things weren’t as complicated as they are now. Your parents are the same way with Sesame Street and Scooby Doo, and your Grandparents are the same with Looney Tunes and Betty Boop.

Here’s my point: No matter how awful the show is, if it’s something you loved as a kid and reminds you of your childhood, it’s something that you’ll love for the rest of your life. I watched one video of someone ranting about how they didn’t really like 3D animated shows, but they liked Jimmy Neutron. Well, isn’t that because you watched Jimmy Neutron when you were a kid? Then you grew out of cartoons?

While, of course, there are awful cartoons on Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network right now, there were shows from the 90’s that didn’t appeal to everyone. I never liked Cow & Chicken, or Ed, Edd n’ Eddy. That doesn’t mean I have bad taste in shows, it means that my preference in what I watch is different, as is everybody’s. When did that become unaccepted?

I think that was well put and I agree. I was also born in the late 90's so get the well you don't really remember. Anyway good artical. The old ones are still my favorite but we should all be a little open minded. Things change all the time.
